The introduction to piezoelement or piezoelectricity was made several years back. But in the current scenario, the innovations in this segment really extended its outreach. Commonly, Buzzer is recognized as a signaling device that is not similar to a loudspeaker. Various types of buzzers are being available in the market accordingly their application necessities. The piezo buzzer is able to generate sound at different frequencies which is louder than electromagnetic buzzers. These are found in different electric gadgets ranging from a simple household appliance to advanced medical diagnostic devices.

These are versatile with different mechanisms through specific features and output ranges. The manufacturers are now taking orders for different shapes according to market demands and design criteria.

Different Piezo Buzzer Technologies:

The structure, sound effects, output range, etc are the parameters which differentiates the piezoelectric buzzers. The use of Feedback type broadly divides it into two types. The feedback line in the buzzers provides a voltage which is proportional to the strain on the core piezoelement. This generated voltage usually creates a basic, self-oscillating, circuit. A piezoceramic element, Without Feedback Type, consists of Electrode, Piezoelectric Ceramics, Metal Plate, and Adhesive. And the ‘With Feedback Type’ has ‘Feedback Electrode’ as a special component. When A.C. voltage applied, the vibration generates sound wave.

In terms of its structure, Transducer and Indicator are the two basic variations. The buzzers with driving circuitry or circuit board those are the instances of indicators. But in transducers, there are no specific driving circuit attached.

Magnetic buzzers are the alternatives used for the same purposes. Piezo buzzers are more useful than Magnetic parts in terms of operating voltage, top rated frequency, and higher SPL. Also power consumptions counted as a major requirement.

Frequency Response – The manufacturers can provide parts with different frequency response qualities.

Sound Pressure Level – It’s a major attribute and specified properly according to the requirements of the completed part. This is measured through dB Pa (decibel Pascals) ad it depends upon the input voltage.

Resonant Frequency – It is measured with Hz scale points and varies through the frequency of the vibration.

Impedance – The electrical impedance differs with the frequency and is the proportion of used voltage to current.

Sound Effects – There are various forms of sound effects that determine the usability of the buzzer. The continuous effect used as feedback or warning signal whereas the siren denotes the alarm. High/low Tone, Slow/Fast Pulse, etc are the warning signal instances. But the chime sound effect is used for the door bells.

Mounting – There are several mounting configuration options also available. Surface mount, PCB mount, Snap-in, Panel mount, Vertical mount, Wire leads, and Wire leads w/flange are the available mounting types. These design related factors have more values when the transducer and indicator like product variations considered.

Nowadays, the use of piezoelement buzzers has more significance than the magnetic ones. These are really affordable and proficient options with low power consumption which is under 30mA. The wide operating voltage (3-250V) is another feature which makes it more efficient and flexible for various applications.
