A fluid bed dryer is made to dry powders, crystals, and medium-sized pellets quickly and uniformly. The fluid bed dryer is used in the pharmaceutical industry.
A fluidized bed dryer (also called fbd?fluid bed dryer) is a kind of equipment used extensively in the pharmaceutical industries to reduce pharmaceutical powder and granules’ moisture content. Drying is essential for wet granules for compression into the tablet and modifying viscous and sticky materials’ characteristics. Drying is commonly the last step in the unit process before compression into tablet form and packaging. VJ Instruments have many pharmaceutical instruments like coating tablet machine, double cone blender.
A perforated bed of moist solid particulates is subjected to high-pressure hot air introduction during the fluidization process. From the bottom, the wet solids are raised and suspended in a stream of air (fluidized state). Direct contact between the wet solid and the hot gases is used to transfer heat. The drying fumes carry the vaporized liquid away. The exit gas is occasionally partially recycled to save energy.
A clear answer for drying wet granules, crystalline solids, or coarse materials is provided by fluid bed dryers. It works on the idea of forcing fluidization by forcing hot air to move quickly through the bed of the material to be dried.
The blower located on the dryer's exhaust side uses the no-negative-pressure principle to produce the induced draught and draw in the fresh air. The bottom of the product container holding the wet substance introduces a stream of hot, filtered air. The air distribution plate and Dutch sieve are both included in this container. By generating turbulence inside the product container, the air stream is transmitted through the material bed and fluidizes the product particles. Each particle is surrounded by heated air as a result of fluidization, which causes rapid and even heating and drying. The top of the machine has filter bags to keep particulates from escaping.

Dryers' Importance for the Pharmaceutical Sector
Although fluidized bed drying can be applied in many different sectors, it probably has the biggest impact on the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical granules and powder can have their moisture content consistently reduced by employing a fluid bed drier. The conventional method of drying items in trays has been superseded with fluid bed drying technology, which has resulted in significantly faster drying durations and more consistent drying conditions for a homogenous end product.
The optimum drying option is offered by fluid bed dryers, particularly for items used in the pharmaceutical sector. With the help of the system, the temperature of the inlet air may be regulated, resulting in the proper amount of moisture evaporating from the granule's surface. The drying process can be delayed rather than accelerated by an inlet air temperature that is too high because it can cause a surface crust that prevents deeper moisture from being transferred to the surface.
Principle:
Because hot air (gas) or ambient air is allowed to flow upward at high pressure through a perforated bottom of a vessel carrying a bed of particle solids or wet granules, a fluid bed dryer is more commonly recognized by its name. The rate at which the granules or particles settle in a stream of hot air is greater than the velocity of the hot air. The term "fluidized state" refers to this situation. Every granule or particle is thoroughly dried by the heated air that surrounds them.
Working :
The item to be dried is put in a removable vessel at the dryer's base. Through the prefilter, the air is delivered from below and heated by heaters built inside. The simultaneous operation of a fan is permitted. The bed grows as the air velocity rises, and additional growth leads to fluidization—turbulent motion of particles.
The granules or particles continue to float in the airflow. When frictional drag on the granules or particles equals the force of gravity, a condition of pressure is reached on a later type of pressure. The high gas velocity causes the particles to ascend in the airstream; this is referred to as a fluidized state.
