How to register for USMLE?

What to study for USMLE?

USMLE Online Course Step 1 covers all the basics that students study or come across in their medical education. These subjects include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and Behavioral Sciences.

USMLE Step 2 CK mainly focuses on candidates’ clinical knowledge which they learn during their clinical rotations. The subjects include Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Preventive Medicine and Psychiatry.

USMLE Step 2 CS is designed to evaluate candidate’s clinical skills, including communication skills, examination skills, bedside skills etc.

How to prepare for USMLE?

For USMLE Step 1, candidates can gain all the essential knowledge regarding basic subjects by reading KAPLAN lecture notes and watching video lectures. Furthermore, students are advised to read ‘First Aid for USMLE Step 1’ to integrate their basic knowledge. For Pathology, candidates must gain knowledge from Goljan.

For USMLE Step 2 CK, candidates can gain their clinical knowledge from Master The Boards (MTB) book by Conrad Fischer and Kaplan Series.

For USMLE Step 2 CS, candidates are expected to have full hold on their communication skills and medical ethics.

In order to practice and assess their own knowledge, candidates can get practice and assessment questions by subscribing to USMLE world (uworld), Kaplan QBank and NBME.

USMLE Exam Details in Brief

Total numbers of USMLE Questions asked are 322 divided into 7 blocks and 394 divided into 8 blocks in USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 CK respectively. Total time allotted to attempt all the questions is 8 hours for Step 1 and 9 hours for Step 2 CK including 1 hour break in each exam. For Step 2 CS, there are 12 cases through which candidates’ clinical skills will be assessed. For each station, candidates will get 15 minutes to interact with the patient and next 15 minutes to make notes.

All those medical students who manage to pass USMLE Steps will be able to drop their resume in order to apply for residency/training programs in United States.
