reduce stress

When was the last time you read a book? Let’s face it. Life is busy and it is hard to sit down, find some quiet, and just read. As a child and teenager, I read as many books as I could get my hands on, but this habit has been hard to keep as an adult. I have recently recommitted to daily reading as I have been reminded of all the health benefits of reading. So, why should you pick up a book today? Here are 5 reasons.

Read to reduce stress. I recently came over a shocking statistic. Reading can reduce stress as much as 68%. It reduces stress more than taking a walk, drinking tea, or listening to music. In fact, even six minutes of reading slows heart rates and eases tension. Reading also improves memory and reduces your risk of Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. Reading is simply good for your health. Read these interesting reading statistics and facts to find even more benefits of reading.

Read to learn something new. Reading improves vocabulary and increases knowledge. It gives you the opportunity to travel to other places and learn about different cultures. Characters in books can also teach as lessons that are applicable to our own lives.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go." -Dr. Seuss

Read to model reading for your children. Want your kids to read more? Let them see you reading. Kids that see their parents reading are more likely to want to read themselves. They will value the importance of reading, and their vocabulary and knowledge will grow. This will carry on into their adult lives, leading them to have a better chance of being successful, contributing members of their communities.

Read to utilize a different form of entertainment. Reading is a relatively cheap hobby. In fact, you can get most books that you want from the library for free. Our local library sells used books for very little and there are many bookstores that sell used books as well. You can download an e-book or even listen to an audiobook when you are in the car (yes, this counts). Trade and share books with friends when you can. There are many ways to get access to new books for free.

Read to enhance your chance of future success. People who make reading a priority are more creative, have increased memory, and are more focused. In fact, reading increases emotional intelligence, and consequently, your career prospects. (CNBC) Higher literacy proficiencies are linked to higher annual salaries. Need more convincing? Bill Gates claims to read 50 books a year. That is roughly one book a week. Warren Buffet claims to read 500 pages a day. Oprah has a book club aimed to promote books and get her followers reading.

"Reading is essential for those who seek to rise about the ordinary."- Jim Rohn

The benefits of reading are undeniable. I challenge you to find 20 minutes today and pick up a book. Make a commitment to finish it. Then repeat again and again.
