Filter Dryers: Their Usage and Importance in HVAC Systems

Any refrigeration or air conditioning system must have filter driers.

The basic operation of these devices and the distinctions between the numerous varieties that are now on the market are described in this article.

In a refrigeration or air conditioning system, a filter-drier serves two vital purposes.

First, it adsorbs system impurities like water, which can produce acids, and second, it provides physical filtering.

Each component must be evaluated to ensure proper and cost-effective dryer design.

Filter driers are HVAC system components that combine a filter and a dryer (or drier).

To prevent debris like dirt, metal, or chips from getting into the refrigerant flow control, a filter is utilized.

The thermostatic expansion valve or a simple capillary tube could be used as the refrigerant flow control mechanism.

Do you require an HVAC filter dryer?

An air conditioner's filter dryer is a crucial component. Manufacturers typically include a filter dryer for installation with a new home comfort system because they recognize how crucial they are.

Soaking Up Water and Avoiding Acidity

The most crucial role of a dryer is to be able to drain water from a refrigeration system.

Water can originate from a variety of places, including motor windings, system leaks, trapped air from poor evacuation, and others.

Another source results from incorrect handling of hygroscopic polyolester (POE) lubricants, which rapidly absorb moisture.

Compared to the previously used mineral oils, POEs can absorb more moisture from their environment and hold it much tighter. This water can lead to freeze-ups and metallic component corrosion.

Variety of Filters

The usage of filter dryer depend on it types such as:

  • Liquid line type
After the condenser coil and before the expansion valve, the liquid line type is installed.

Before flowing from the condenser to the expansion valve, the liquid refrigerant is filtered to remove debris and moisture. Any particles in the system that are 20 microns or larger will be removed by a good filter.

  • Suction line type
Before the compressor and before the evaporator is the suction line type.

This tool is employed to safeguard the compressor, particularly following any malfunction that contaminates the system.

It is crucial to have the suction line filter drier installed since motor failure in the compressor typically results in the introduction of acid and other impurities into the refrigerant system.

When Should a Filter Drier Be Replaced?

You must change the filter dryer whenever the air conditioner's sealed system is opened since even a small bit of dirt, water, or debris can cause chaos.

In other words, you should install a new drier from a reputable HVAC parts suppliers such as Al Imran.

Whenever you replace a compressor, TVX, or any other part of the refrigerant system you can install filter dryer. Fortunately, filter driers are inexpensive in comparison to other sealed system components.

To ensure compatibility, though, make sure to compare the part's specs to those of your AC before making a purchase.

Pay special attention to the dryer's dimensions, the kind of refrigerant for which it is rated, and be sure to install it so that it faces the proper direction.
