"Here Comes the Gown: 150 Years of Wedding Dresses," is a show with multiple components and events. It begins today at the St. George Art Museum and runs to May 9, 2015.

No other dress takes the extraordinary time to search out in order to find the perfect one than the wedding dress. No other dress requires the resources. Lovingly and specially chosen, these dresses are fabric art.

Few rites of passage evoke the strong and visceral response more than weddings do.

The St. George Art Museum has solicited dresses from the community and beyond from 1850 to now, obtaining more than 50 garments in the process. Most submitters or brides will record an oral history, so that each gown has a voice, a story.

To access the stories, bring your smartphone and your headphones. The stories are also available to download for free on iTunes, as well as via podcast fromsgartmuseum.org. Free Wi-Fi is also available at the St. George Art Museum for visitors to download stories on their tablets or laptops.

Other items from the wedding will be included if available, especially the wedding photograph, an art in itself.

A compilation of words that people have come up with when asked what comes to mind when one envisions or thinks of weddings will be placed on the walls throughout the exhibit.

A memory gown will be located for all visitors to pin on their memories, their hopes, and their dreams. Matrimonial trivia will be part of the exhibit so that visitors can learn fun facts about wedding traditions of the world.

The Museum will solicit favorite wedding songs and favorite wedding movies in an ongoing quest for the most popular.
