What is Azure Blob Storage? | Azure Course | Intellipaat

Azure blob storage is a Microsoft cloud service that allows users to store massive amounts of unstructured data in the form of files, photos, text, videos, or a combination of all of these. Additionally, it serves as managed disc subsystems for Azure virtual machines as well as underlying storage for Azure data lake analytics solutions.

The abbreviation "blob" stands for "Binary Large Object." Images, videos, PDF files, documents, text files, and other types of binary big objects are a few examples. Azure blob storage is a method for massively storing these kinds of objects in the cloud environment so that they may later be accessed with the best possible performance. Files kept in blob storage can be accessed in a number of different ways. Using HTTP or HTTPS, we can access them from any location. Applications can access data kept in blob storage via the Azure REST API, Azure PowerShell, Azure CLI, and Azure storage client libraries.

Storage Accounts

Your data is housed in a specific namespace in Azure thanks to a storage account. Each item you store within Azure Storage does have an address that contains your own account name. The base address again for objects in your storage account is formed from the account name and the Blob Storage endpoint.

Containers

In a manner analogous to a directory in a file system, a container groups a collection of blobs. Containers and blobs can both be stored in an infinite number of containers within a single storage account.

Since a container name is a component of the distinctive URI used to identify the container or its blobs, it must be a valid DNS name. When naming a container, remember to:

• Container names can have a length of 3 to 63 characters.

• Container names can only contain lowercase letters, digits, and the dash (-) character, and they must begin with a letter or a number.

• Container names may not contain two or more consecutive dashes.

Blobs

Three blob kinds are supported by Azure Storage:

• Binary and text data are stored in block blobs. Block blobs are built up of manageable individual data chunks. Blobs of blocks can hold up to 190.7 TiB.

• Block blobs and Append Blobs both consist of blocks but append blobs are optimised for append operations. For situations like logging data from virtual machines, append blobs are ideal.

• Random access files up to 8 TiB in size are kept in page blobs. Page blobs act as drives for Azure virtual machines and store virtual hard drive (VHD) files. Overview of Azure page blobs contains more details about page blobs.
