Jodhpur is a city in the Thar desert of Rajasthan, India. It's known for its imposing Mehrangarh Fort and vibrant bazaars. It was the capital of the Maratha Empire from 1803–1889 and the site of battles between British and Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The city has been home to many rulers including Maharaja Sawai Jai Narayan, who made it his capital when he founded his empire; Udaipur being then renamed as Ajmer (a competing claim by Alwar state, which was later accepted by government of India), Mysore under Tipu Sultan and Nawab Saheb Jani Singh Verma.

Other historic buildings

Jodhpur has many other historic buildings that are worth a visit. The Rao-ka-Talao, or the Royal Lake, is a beautiful stepwell located in the center of Jodhpur and is a great place to visit during the evening hours when it's lit up. The Jaswant Thada, or Jaswant Grand Palace, was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his son who died young. It is one of Jodhpur’s most iconic landmarks and can be seen from almost anywhere in town.
