World of Warcraft ultimately led to WoTLK Gold, but the nearly 15 years of enduring stories and world-building within WoW has made some of the older material obsolete. Blizzard intends to rectify that with the forthcoming Reforged remake of World of Warcraft, by updating older pieces to reflect the world as it currently is.

"This is Reforged edition. We're exploring the campaign in general, and The Culling in particular," Brian Sousa, Art Lead on Classic Games at Blizzard, told P2Pah. "We totally redesigned the map's layout and made it look similar to Stratholme in World of Warcraft because people have been in Stratholme, people know the path to Stratholme and the original didn't have any of this. It had a completely different feel altogether. It was a place with Greek columns and strange statues and rivers, and the aquarium, and other items that the average person wouldn't recognize even if they came gamers from World of Warcraft playing this game.

"That was just one aspect. We're like, 'Well, this should appear like Stratholme So it was redesigned using that. As we go through more of the campaign, there's likely to be more instances when we'll rely on World of Warcraft for influence since they've got the lore. They've established the foundations for all these characters, all of these locations, and they've put an entire backstory to everything. We have a massive library to pull from."

Together with World of Warcraft: Reforged, Blizzard took the opportunity at BlizzCon to announce a launch date that will be available for WoW Classic. Much like Reforged too, it takes games from Blizzard's original library and remasters the game for contemporary players and, unlike Reforged, it's returning the clock to some of the contemporary features that have been added to WoW over the last decade, allowing players to experience the game as it was when it first came out. It's coming in the summer of 2019 and will make it the 15th anniversary since WoW first came out.

Shadowlands Puts Big A Focus on Player Choice in World of Warcraft

The next update to World of Warcraft takes the game to an area that hasn't been explored much before: the Shadowlands, Azeroth's version of the afterlife. The Shadowlands aren't mentioned in any detail about the place in any of the previous games or lore, Blizzard has been free to explore the entire World of Warcraft, with its own rules and characters who are set to introduce new ideas into the somewhat stalwart MMO.

The topic was also discussed at Blizzcon 2019, a primary area of focus for Shadowlands is on improving the power of the player. Although the new expansion will follow a somewhat linear narrative that will lead you through its most important locations and introduce you to its different factions, it'll provide plenty of opportunities to make significant choices. The player will choose which faction to join, that will come with a story that you must complete, and present you with decisions that factor into your look and gear outfits.
