Exploring the Natural Side of St Lucia

When you're planning the ideal Caribbean holiday, the island of St Lucia should be high on the list of choices that comes to mind. Part of the Lesser Antilles, St Lucia was discovered by the French and named after Saint Syracuse. In the early 1800s, the British took control of the island and it remained under their flag until it became part of the West Indies Associated States in the late 1960s and gained full independence in 1979.

One of the best parts of choosing St Lucia for your Caribbean holiday, is that once you have spent time relaxing, lazing on the beach and being pampered, there is still so much to do! The island is small enough that you can explore the sights on a day trip and return to your luxury hotel in the evening - just in time to watch the sun set over the waters off the western coast.

Pigeon Island

Located off the northern coast of St Lucia, Pigeon Island was originally inhabited by the Arawak people until they were expelled in the late 1700s in order to make way for the establishment of Fort Rodney. In 1972, the island was joined to the mainland by a man-made stretch. It was designated a national park just seven years later, and in 1992 it was made a national landmark. The island, with its two peaks and many ruins of various forts from throughout history is a perfect place to visit on your Caribbean holiday. Spend an afternoon here soaking up the atmosphere, stroll through the woodlands or sit on one of the two beaches before grabbing a bite to eat in the small pub or the single restaurant. If you plan your visit toward the end of the April and into May, you can attend the annual Jazz Festival that takes place on the island.

Seeing Nature

If you didn't get enough of the natural aspects of St Lucia by spending some time on Pigeon Island while on your Caribbean holiday, you should take some time to explore the rainforests on a gentle stroll. Your concierge will be able to arrange a knowledgeable local guide who will take you along the best routes. If you're a bit of a bird-watcher, get up early and traverse the Millet Bird Sanctuary Trail, which will introduce you to up to 35 species of bird – some of which are endemic to the island. For some amazing views, take the Barre de L’isle rainforest trail, which is named for its feature of dividing the eastern and western halves of the island. Allow your guide to do what they do best, and keep your eyes peeled for ferns as large as a house, stunning scenery and amazing plant life and wildlife.
