The Embassy can issue emergency passports under very precise & limited circumstances. Emergency passports are usually limited in validity & cannot be extended. Also, you must appear at the Embassy or Consulate in person, during business hours, for an emergency passport application. In most cases, emergency passports are issued on the same day

An emergency passport may be issued on the spot or within 2 days. It is valid for 1 year and costs the same amount as any regular passport. Anyone can apply for an emergency appointment either for imminent travel within up to 2 weeks of travel or to issue or renew a visa within 30 days of expiration. At the appointment, the clerk will choose whether you are eligible for an emergency passport or any full-validity one. To get an emergency passport for travel purposes, you want to provide proof of travel like a paid ticket. An itinerary is inadequate as it must have proof that it was already paid for. Emergency passport application for U.S. passports is not valid for travel through France, Holland, or Belgium.

How to Obtain an Emergency Passport

If there are no appointments available, request an emergency appointment through the Embassy’s online form. After submitting the form with all other details, send a follow email with any related to your request. Attach any applicable documentation like paid airline tickets in the case of imminent travel or copies of both the parents’ passports and their visas in the case of the need for a visa for a child. Emergency passport application needs the same documentation as for a regular passport, and either proof of travel or an expired visa. When applying for an emergency passport, the DS-11 form should be used, for both adults & children.

If your need for an emergency passport is approved, you will be issued with a limited-validity emergency passport the same day, which is valid usually for one year. The fee is similar to a regular passport. If you have applied for a full-validity passport but have not received the announcement that your passport has arrived, you may contact the Embassy for an emergency passport through the online forms, which is followed by an email containing a copy of your paid schedule. You will need to submit a newer application form & photo. However, you will not want to pay the application fees again unless they have previously mailed the passport to you. A visa can be delivered in an emergency passport. Visa applications should be made in a short time after receiving the passport. To exchange an emergency passport with any full-validity one, you have to send your emergency passport too. All the applications may be submitted by mail or through the drop-box.
