Black Rice As An Alternative

All over the world people have their own preferences for certain foods, while they avoid other foods or types of food. For example, in many countries such as the US, there is a greater than ever before drive to promote healthy living, and therefore a strong emphasis on healthy foods.

This means foods that are processed, foods containing colorants and other additives, are seen to be the unhealthy choice. Pure, organically grown and harvested food is the option that enjoys great popularity these days, and with good reason too: pure foods are less likely to cause physical discomfort in the body after consumption.

Pure, organic food products free from gluten and wheat, for example, are now a favorite with many. It is known that gluten can cause discomfort in the stomach and abdomen; therefore more and more people support a gluten free product. Therefore they shop where they know the foods do not contain gluten and wheat, such as at specific food stores and retailers that specifically market their foods as such. They are very often retailers that supply ramen and gluten free noodles made from organic ingredients to include rice.

Rice noodles are popular all over the world, no longer only in Southeast Asia where they originated. These noodles and how to grow the rice they are made from have found their way into many parts of the world, also the US. Rice noodles can now be ordered in restaurants, fast food outlets – and are, of course, found in people’s homes. There are different types of rice noodles too.

Some are made from brown rice, whereas other options come from black rice. So, brown rice noodles and black rice noodles are variants of the same food. Black rice, incidentally, is also referred to as purple rice by many. It gets its color from a pigment known as anthocyanin and has a mild, nutty flavor with many nutritional benefits.

When you buy your black rice, be mindful that you make sure the packaging says wheat and gluten free – if you support the consumption of organic, pure, 100% natural foods. This is, especially, good for those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance and also for vegans and kosher chefs – if it is indicated on the packaging.

Eating black rice, and therefore black rice noodles (which are indicated wheat and gluten free) are said to have certain health benefits for the person eating them. It contains high protein, also higher than other types of rice. It is a good source of carbohydrates, fiber and iron too – all micronutrients our bodies need to help us function.

Some sources maintain that black rice may contain as many as 23 types of antioxidants, more than other types of rice. Even if there is no conclusive evidence, it is maintained that black rice may help to protect individuals against heart disease and even cancer. However, much more research has to be done in this regard and it is therefore not a cure or treatment. The same is said about eye health, lowering of blood sugar levels, for example.

What is good to know is that it is indeed gluten free, and that many great recipes are available to ensure you can enjoy a great meal where black rice noodles are either the main ingredient or is offered as a side dish.

So why was black rice such an important food in ancient China? It is said that because of its unique color it was meant for royalty only – and forbidden for consumption by the lower classes and masses. If that is true, then black rice is the king of rice variants. Especially if it is offered as a gluten and wheat free option.
