Think Differently with Autodesk Dynamo

Autodesk Dynamo is by no means my area of expertise, and I still have a lot to learn about its possibilities. Having said that, Dynamo has pushed me to think differently. When I was a BIM Manager, I first utilised Autodesk Dynamo to set up a model audit that I could use to monitor how elements (and so much more) were being used on various projects throughout the office and track their usage over time to see how it improves or degrades in quality. Once problems were found, we could discuss solutions as a team with our BIM coordinators. Just the way Dynamo looked for items made the solution easier to find, but also a solution that you would not normally do. Instead of using a manual procedure, which on scale gets more difficult; you could use model data to find objects. I recall a model which no one who originally created it still worked at the company, and it was complex. Complex façade and floor separations.

What we did know was that the model had poor performance and was incredibly slow compared to its size, although having a slightly larger file size than usual. I interrogated that model traditionally, i.e., manually, and found only a few problems, none of which would be the root of this performance problem. I eventually used my auditing script, and pandora’s box was opened. I found DWGs embedded in every component of the façade element. I came across a modeller who drew tens of thousands of lines for tiles rather than a fill pattern, and the list goes on.

You start to think the same way when you design your Revit models since creating a script requires you to think systematically and logically from beginning to conclusion. Before embarking on a path that you might become stuck on, you start with more of the end solutions in mind. Thinking this way initially in script creation felt like my brain was being twisted and pulled, it challenged me, it increased my analytical thinking, and it caused me to consider solutions or strategies more laterally.

We currently support many clients in utilising Dynamo in countless ways. You can get answers from Autodesk Dynamo that would not traditionally be considered. Challenge yourself and challenge your team to do more with Dynamo and think differently. In addition to many other things, it integrates, creates, analyses, and modifies.

Get in touch with us at SYMETRI to find out how you can do more with Autodesk Dynamo to suit your needs. We also provide training courses for those new to Dynamo here. Alternatively, you can call us on 0345 370 1444 or email us at info@symetri.co.uk.
