Education is an important tool that helps an individual to grow in life. Right from the moment they grow, education starts. With time passing, it gets categorized into elementary education, higher education, graduation, post-graduation, etc. While in our higher education, we come across three streams namely, Science, Commerce, and Humanities.

Each stream has its importance and is equally important. Let us talk about the stream humanities specifically in this blog. We all know Humanities or more commonly known as Arts is an important stream, with abundant scopes for the future.

WHY HUMANITIES?

The humanities came into existence around the time of the Renaissance to distinguish the study of human matters from the things that were concerned with theology on the one hand and Nature on the other. The things concerned with Nature became the source of modern Science, but that still left the study of humankind itself. Humankind is the only organism that has been able to study itself as a thing, as something in the world. And while part of that study belongs to the Sciences, the central part of it, the construction of the imaginative models of experience, belongs to the Humanities.

Merely studying Humanities is not the key, but to excel in the subject one needs some creativity as well. We tend to regard the Arts and Sciences as being different from one another, and this is true up to a point. The Sciences are primarily concerned with the world as it is, and the Arts are primarily concerned with the world man wants to live in. What is not readily recognized is the fact that both require the same mental processes. Reason and a sense of fact are as important to the novelist as they are to the chemist. Genius and creative imagination play the same role in mathematics that they do in poetry. Laws and principles exist just as much in the verbal disciplines as they do in the Sciences. And precision, clarity, and the ability to reason are just as much a concern to the student of the humanities as they are to the student of Science.

WHY CREATIVITY IS IMPORTANT FOR STUDYING ARTS?

Creativity is the key to studying this stream as it requires a lot of thinking, imagination, and analysis. Creative thinking in general can be defined as the interaction among aptitude, process, and the environment by which an individual or group produces a perceptible product that is both novel and useful as designed within a social context.

Creativity might traditionally be associated with the arts and humanities, but it is equally important for complex problem-solving in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths. Important creativity skills include listening, observation, and empathy as well as experimentation, collaboration, and analysis.

Humanities are the academic discipline that studies the aspect of human society. A better way to understand nature, human life, and culture, the Humanities are a step forward. In the past years, an increased number of students are opting for Humanities, as per a recent survey. Not only job opportunities, but students also find knowing, understanding and appreciating the world in a better way by studying Humanities. The stream offers a variety of research work. Humanities can help one understand reasoning too. Psychologically, too, this stream is highly beneficial.

The students who opt for this subject go into different branches of society. And especially they go into branches where creativity is the key and where creativity is needed. For example, they are the ones who prepare the policies and would be the policymakers. Hence creativity is an essential requisite for the students opting for Humanities. Humanities encourage us to think creatively. They teach us to reason about being human and to ask questions about our world. The Humanities develop informed and critical citizens. Without the humanities, democracy could not flourish. Humanities help us understand others through their languages, histories, and cultures. They foster social justice and equality. And they reveal how people have tried to make moral, spiritual, and intellectual sense of the world. The humanities teach empathy. They teach us to deal critically and logically with subjective, complex, imperfect information. And for consuming all of there one needs to be creative enough both at heart and mind.

Colleges and Universities can make creativity a core part of the curriculum because creativity includes critical as well as divergent thinking. They can embed creativity into the curriculum by following a more product-oriented learning approach. Which in simple words means students learning the stream by being creators rather than being passive consumers.

Beyond politics, a lot of our success in creating a sustainable world relies on individuals and their personal choices.

Increasingly in the workplace, sustainability will be a shared responsibility across organisations, with everyone expected to have the knowledge and expertise to put it into practice in their role and their decisions, from economists, lawyers and accountants to architects, fashion designers and philosophers. Therefore, embedding sustainability in all areas of the Shape curriculum is critical to preparing our students for the workplace of tomorrow.
