There is little to argue that quick access to hot water is essential for personal hygiene and maintaining your home in livable conditions. Not surprisingly, a good deal of money is spent on fueling the water heaters. That is why choosing the right type of water heater now will save you a lot of money over the next decade. The cost effective option appears to be an on-demand water heater that runs on natural gas.

Much has been written on why tankless water heaters are better than the rest for saving on fuel in the long term. There is no reason to repeat it in detail. Suffice to say that tankless units heat the water only when you need it so it gets consumed instantly and no hot water is left to cool in the tank. No heat is released to the air and that means no energy is wasted. Bit by bit, the savings add up and after a few years it can even pay for the cost of the tankles water heater itself.

Now that we know why tankless water heaters are so good, let us discuss why natural gas is the best fuel for these units by comparing it with the main alternative. We are talking about electricity. Tankless water heaters built to run on electric power are also available and nobody can deny that they can be handy in some situations. Yet, if you want the ultimate reduction on your bills, electricity is a poor choice. Electric will probably always be much more expensive than natural gas and there is no financial benefit of preferring electric when gas is available. Marketers sometimes claim that electric is green energy because it causes no carbon emission. This claim is not correct. Most of the electricity is generated from fossil fuel such as natural gas. The efficiency of this conversion is often as low as 30% so everytime you turn on the lights some coal or gas is burning somewhere and releasing tons of carbon dioxide. Using natural gas directly for heat is much more efficient and the best natural gas tankless water heater can convert more than 95% of the energy stored in natural gas to heat, which is way better than a thermal power station doing the job.
