Posted: Feb 23, 2023
Strange sounds while driving in most of the times spoils our happy mood. Imagine you are going with your family for a long trip, then suddenly a clicking sound starts up from the car. This sound would no doubt draw attention of most of the people. It can even make you worry. You may not able to enjoy the journey. So strange sounds are to be prevented and diagnosed soon when it comes out. But before the diagnosis, it is necessary to know about the causes of clicking sounds. Now most of the Mercedes car owners complain about a clicking noise from the car while driving.
What causes clicking noise in Mercedes during running?
Bad battery
A battery provides electricity to the starter motor when you try to start the engine. But it the battery is faulty and cannot store enough charge, then your starter would not get sufficient battery voltage to start the engine and it would just click. If the battery is really bad, then you need to replace it after testing it.
Bad alternator
If the battery is in good condition, then problem can be with your alternator. Alternator charges the battery, if the alternator is damaged, then it would not be able to charge the battery. Due to low charge, the battery would not make the starter to start, leading to clicking noise from the starter. An alternator is tested and replaced.
Lack of engine oil or bad oil
Oil lubricates all the moving parts of the engine. Without proper amount and proper quality of oil, the engine would fail to work properly and become less inefficient. As the engine becomes low on efficiency, the energy is wasted in the form of heat and sounds in the engine. Due to lack of lubrication, the engine parts come in direct contact with each other and produce clicking, tapping sounds. Flushing out bad oil and putting new oil into engine can only solve the issue.
Worn brake pads
If the brake pads are worn or loose, then it would also produce clicking and grinding sound. In this case, the sound occurs while braking especially and the sound would come from wheels. So it is very easy to know whether the culprit for clicking noise is brake pad or not. If the brake pads are worn when you inspect the braking system, you have to change them.
Bad starter
The culprit can be your starter too. If your starter is bad or damaged, then it can also produce clicking noise while starting the engine. The starter motor is to be tested properly and replaced if found faulty. A starter motor generally lasts for 100000 miles.
Power steering fluid is low
Lack of fluid in the steering cause lack of lubrication in the steering column. So turning the steering makes a clicking sound. This cause is also easy to get located. You just need to change or top up new power steering fluid.
Loosened lug nuts
The lug nuts keep the wheels fixed properly in its place. While repairing of some components that require removal of wheel, sometimes the mechanic leave the lug nuts loose. As the lug nuts are not tightened as it needs, while running, they shake and produce clicking sounds. The lug nuts are to be tightened by wrenches.
Bad CV axle
The CV axles provide power to the wheels from the transmission. As they rotate, they require lubrication. Lack of lubrication makes the various parts of the CV axle dry. So while moving, when they rotate, they produce a clicking noise. The shaft boots also get damage due to lack of lubrication. Replacing the CV axle may solve the problem.
Conclusion
Lack of maintenance is the main cause of such strange sounds. If the car is properly maintained, then the parts become properly lubricated and run smoothly with no strange sounds.
