Calluses are a common problem on the feet. The most common cause of a callus is excessive pressure on the area. Due to the pressure the skin becomes thicker to protect itself. Eventually the skin becomes so thick that it becomes painful. A podiatrist can easily remove the callus, but it is most likely to come back again as the pressure that caused it is still there. The only way to permanently get rid of a callus is to investigate and find the reason for that higher pressure.

Another way to self-care to deal with a callus is by using an electric callus remover. This is safe and are a simple and effective way to remove calluses and rough skin from your feet. That callus will still return given time if the cause is not also addressed.

To use an electric callus remover, you need to fist prepare your feet by soaking the feet in a basin of warm, soapy water for about 10-15 minutes. This helps soften the calluses and makes them easier to remove. After that, pat your feet dry with a towel after soaking them. Make sure your feet are completely dry before using the electric callus remover. Plug in or insert the batteries into your electric callus remover and turn it on. Most callus removers have a power button or switch. Some need to be charged with a USB cable first. Hold the callus remover firmly in your hand, and gently place the rotating roller against the callus on your foot. Move the callus remover in a slow, circular motion over the affected area. Apply light to moderate pressure but avoid pressing too hard to prevent skin irritation or injury. Keep the device moving continuously to avoid focusing on one spot for too long, which can lead to discomfort or damage to healthy skin. Periodically stop and check your progress. The dead skin should be sloughing off as you go. You can use a towel or mat underneath your feet to catch the shavings. Continue using the callus remover until you have removed the desired amount of dead skin. Be cautious not to overdo it, as you don't want to remove too much healthy skin. If there are still some stubborn calluses or rough areas, you can use a pumice stone or foot file to further smooth the skin. Gently rub the pumice stone or foot file over the areas that need additional attention. After removing the calluses, rinse your feet with clean water to remove any remaining dead skin and pat them dry. To keep your feet soft and hydrated, apply a moisturizing cream or foot cream to your feet. Turn off the callus remover and clean the roller head. Most callus removers allow you to remove the roller for easy cleaning. Rinse it under running water and let it dry before reassembling. Store your electric callus remover in a cool, dry place, and make sure it's kept out of the reach of children.

The electric callus removers are generally safe, however it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific callus remover, as features and usage may vary from one model to another. Additionally, it's important to be gentle and patient when using a callus remover to avoid skin damage or discomfort. You probably should not use them if you have diabetes or any other medical condition that makes your skin more fragile or prevents you from feeling any discomfort of you were to start to burn the foot. If in doubt, please get advice from a podiatrist.
