The first car on our list is an American made Formula One racer. Its only championship win was at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1967. In 2013 at Pebble Beach’s Gooding & Company auction a lucky bidder took it home after paying the cool $3.74 mil price tag.

Chevrolet Corvette L88 – 1967

You can’t talk about high end American classics without mentioning at least one Corvette. In 1967 Chevy sold 20 of the L88 Vettes making them the object of many a collector’s desire. This one went for an impressive $3.85M when it was all said and done in January 2014 at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Arizona.

Batmobile 1 – 1966

Iconic cars naturally carry price tags that lean toward pricey, and you can’t get much more iconic than the first Batmobile. With styling that was light years ahead of its time, coupled with the fact that it was Batman’s, well, it’s easy to see how someone would pay for the privilege to park it in their own Batcave. In January 2013 someone did just that at the Barrett-Jackson auction.

Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake – 1966

$5,500,000

This little car set a record back in 2007 for its $5.5M price tag at the Barrett-Jackson auction. At that time it carried the title for most expensive American made car sold at auction. It had several factors working for it though, including the fact that it is extremely rare – oh, and it is quite the beauty as well.

Ford GT40 Prototype – 1964

$7,000,000

This amazing little piece of American racing history stole the show in 2014 at Houston’s Mecum auction. It pulled in a cool $7 mil and yet it still ranks third on our list as the most expensive GT40.

Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe – 1965

$7,685,000

Built with the sole purpose of beating Ferrari in GT road racing, this Shelby delivered again and again. It made its rounds, racing in some of the most prestigious races of that time. Its impressive past is no doubt what drove its sale price at the Mecum auction in Monterey in August 2009. $7,685,000 is nothing to sneeze at to be sure.

Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage Lightweight Racing Car – 1968

$11,000,000

The most expensive 1960s car on our list is also the most expensive GT40. While it did race – and do rather well – movie buffs will recognize it as the car that may have overshadowed Steve McQueen in the movie LeMans. In August 2012, this car raked in a hefty $11 million at RM Auctions for the final bid putting it in the record books for highest sale of an American car at auction.
