When should your child have their first eye exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends that children first receive a comprehensive eye exam at the age of six months. Following that, eye examinations should be done at three years old, as well as right before entering school - at the age of five or six.

Typically, these eye examinations will be performed by the child’s pediatrician during routine checkups during these important years. If the pediatrician suspects that there are potential issues with vision, they will likely recommend that the child be seen by a pediatric ophthalmologist.
