They are an eyesore and will start to look even worse once unwanted grass and plants start to grow on and around them. If you leave the stumps for too long, plants will automatically start growing on them which could ruin the beauty of your landscape and the property.
- They take up valuable space that could be used for maybe constructing a patio or any other type of construction to enhance the design of the lawn and extend the living space of your home.
- Since plants, grass and weeds starts to grow on stumps that are left for too long, the stumps gets camouflaged and children playing in the yard might trip and fall. Simply put, they become safety hazards.
A stump can be removed by various methods which includes chemical, fire, stump grinder or by hand. An assessment is needed in order to determine the technique that will best address the situation. Some stumps are easier to remove than others. However, the technique that you used to remove the stump of a pine tree may not apply to the removal of a stump of an oak tree. Generally, it is difficult to remove the roots of deciduous trees because their roots tend to be long and deep. A homeowner is not expected to have such intensive knowledge about the roots of various trees and one can enlist the services of a reputable arborist who has the knowledge, passion, and tools for the job.
The common techniques used to remove tree stumps:
- Removing a Stump by Hand
If the stump is from a small tree, diseased or older tree, it can be removed successfully by hand. The tools required for this purpose is a chainsaw, pick mattock, a digging bar, a shovel, an ax, some chain, and a four-wheel-drive truck.
- Burning a Stump
Holes are drilled in the tree stump about 10 inches deep and are filled with potassium nitrate and hot oil. Scrap woods are placed on top of the stump and ignited.
- Chemical Stump Remover and Tree Stump Killer
For this method, you would require a drill, chainsaw, an ax, potassium nitrate and fuel oil. This method does not involve much manual work but it would take about eight weeks for the stump to disappear.
- Rot a Tree Stump
This process also requires the drilling of holes of about 8 to 10 inches deep. The holes need to be filled with high-nitrogen substances. The stump will gradually begin to soften and the holes need to be filled with dirt as the softening process begins.
Most homeowners do not have access to the tools and chemicals that are mentioned above. Also, removal of tree stump could be dangerous so extreme caution and care should be exercised.
