One of the main types of adhesive tape is pressure-sensitive adhesive tape (PSA, self-adhesive, or self-stick adhesive). It is a flexible, generally thin substance that can have a single or double-sided coating. When applied with pressure to the majority of dry, clean surfaces, PSA will stick to a wide range of substrates. Solvent, water, or heat are not necessary for the activation of pressure-sensitive adhesives. The amount of pressure required to apply the adhesive to the surface has a direct impact on the binding.

For PSA Tapes, what kind of adhesive is used?

Rubber: Adhesives made with tackifying resins, oils, and antioxidants that are based on synthetic or natural rubbers. Rubber is the PSA with the fastest stick capabilities and the lowest cost. Using rubber adhesive in high-heat applications is not advised.

Acrylic: Adhesives made with acrylic polymers typically age better over time and are more resistant to environmental variables and solvents. Acrylic adhesives can withstand greater temperatures and usually form a stronger bond than conventional rubber adhesives.

The only adhesive that adheres adequately to silicone substrates is silicone, which is formulated from silicone polymers. Compared to rubber adhesives, silicone adhesives are more expensive and have a lower initial tack, but they can tolerate higher temperatures.

How Does a Normal Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Tape Get Made?

Single Coated: A material (Facestock) with an adhesive coating on only one side. A silicone-coated release liner shields the glue.

A mass of unsupported adhesive film coated on a release liner with a release coat on both sides is known as transfer tape. Transfer tapes adhere well to a variety of surfaces.

Double Coated: PSA is applied to a carrier on both sides. A broad range of materials, such as plastic films, tissue, nonwovens, etc., can be used as the adhesive carrier. Laminates and carpet tape are two common applications.
