Christmas Traditions For Kids – A Brief Understanding Of How We Celebrate In The Us
Posted: Feb 19, 2015
Christmas Stockings
According to legend, a kindly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his beloved wife and foolishly squandered his fortune. This left his three daughters without any money and no chance of getting married. Saint Nicholas heard their plight and decided to help the three sisters anonymously. He rode his white horse and dropped three pouches of gold coins down the chimney where they, by chance, fell into the stockings that were hung by the fireplace to dry. This is how the kid’s Christmas tradition of hanging stockings came to be. To this day, children and adults alike hang stockings near their fireplaces and hope that Santa Claus will fulfil their wishes and bring gifts for them through the chimney of the house.
Holly and Ivy
Legend has it that holly sprang from the footsteps of Christ as he walked the earth. The pointed leaves were said to represent the crown of thorns Christ wore while on the cross and the red berries symbolized the blood he shed. People also say that since holly managed to stay green and fresh, even during the harsh winter season, it possessed magical properties to ward away evil spirits that howled in the chilly and stormy winter nights. This is why even to this day, as a children’s Christmas tradition, we still adorn our doorways with wreaths of holly and berries to keep any evil from entering our homes.
Candy Canes
This is one of the most special and quite frankly, delectable Christmas traditions for kids to enjoy. Legend has it that during the 17th century, craftsmen created the white sticks of candy in the shape of shepherds’ crooks at the suggestion of the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. Soon, these candy canes became a part of mainstream family decorations where they were almost always hung on Christmas trees for the amazement of the children in the family. Even to this day, the white and red candy cane is seen as a representation of festivities and merriment that are brought about by the holiday season. You can easily understand why this particular tradition is the favourite of kids around the world. It is just too tasty to be true!
