What is STEM education and why is it important?
Posted: Nov 30, 2024
STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM education (or STEAM education, as it has also been called in recent years after incorporating the arts and their creative component) encompasses all these disciplines in an attempt to work on them more or less jointly with the aim of children and adolescents acquiring a series of transversal skills that allow them to face any situation or challenge they encounter.
The objective of incorporating STEM in schools from the earliest stages is mainly to provide the youngest children with tools and practical knowledge that are aligned with today's society and the reality that they will have to live in the future, both on a personal and professional level.
STEM subjects are especially geared towards creative and collaborative problem solving. When worked on in an integrated manner, each of these four branches provides a different perspective when it comes to creating new solutions that can respond to people's problems and needs and that also consider aspects as important as sustainability. Thus, through science we can learn to understand the physical world and relate to it in a more responsible way; technology-related skills allow us to use machines, programs and other advances, so that we are able to make the most of the technology around us to solve problems and improve the lives of all people, and mathematics is essential for our daily lives, from simple operations to data interpretations and their use to make predictions that help us develop solutions.
Future professionals will have to take into account many variables in order to have a positive impact on society, and stem education plays a relevant role in this regard, both when it comes to transmitting to the youngest knowledge that helps them become aware of and understand the world around them, and when it comes to helping them develop skills such as innovation and creativity, reasoning and analysis skills, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and communication, among others. These skills are applicable in all areas of life, but it is important to emphasize that they are increasingly valued within the professional field.
Career opportunities are also one of the main reasons why STEM is becoming increasingly important. Many of the jobs that children will have today do not yet exist and will be created progressively over the next few years, just as if we look back now, there are many professions that have only existed for a few years.
Technology is evolving at an accelerated pace and is increasingly present in our daily lives and within all professional sectors, not only in areas closely linked to technology and science. Therefore, it is important that schools are a space in which everyone has the opportunity to access this knowledge, not only because they provide different perspectives that help young people understand the world and be able to develop within it, but also because in many cases they will be essential skills for them when they are older.
Programming and robotics are part of STEM and very soon having basic programming knowledge will be as important as other skills that are taught in school from a young age, such as reading and writing or mathematics. If you are part of an educational center and you are looking for resources and solutions to include programming and computational thinking in the classroom, contact us to find out about the different educational proposals that we can offer you.
