The word Basmati is an amalgamation of two Hindi words, Bas-meaning ‘aroma’ and Mati-meaning ‘full of’. This is self-explanatory as to why Basmati Rice has been named so. This rice variety is synonymous with Indian delicacies as many special dishes are prepared using it. Some of them are Biryani, Kheer, Saffron Rice and Pulao amongst others.

We all would have often observed that our mothers preserve Basmati Rice to be cooked on special occasions and for serving it to guests. But do we really know why that is so? What is so special about this rice? Hereunder are some nutritional facts and certain characteristics that make it so popular. Have a look…

Nutritional Facts About Basmati Rice:

  • Basmati Rice contains 85% carbohydrate, which is an important source of energy.
  • It has no fat content and can be a part of a healthy diet.
  • Contains high quality of proteins and amino acids, which help in building muscles and make us stronger.
  • It is gluten free and easy to digest. So, people with allergies to that protein can also consume it.
  • It has low or medium glycemic index (GI). Consuming lower GI carbohydrate helps control our hunger and weight. People trying to lose weight can add Basmati Rice to their meals.
  • Unlike other long grain rice varieties, it does not raise blood sugar levels.

Why Basmati Rice is Preferred Over Other Varieties:

  • While most types of rice are avoided by people on diet, Basmati Rice is a healthy alternative that will not make you put on weight.
  • It has a unique savory taste of itself that gets enhanced when cooked with mild spices.
  • It is famous for its after cooking aroma and known as the ‘queen of fragrance’, which is absent in other types of rice.
  • You can enjoy cooking Basmati because it comes with perfect unbroken grains. Unlike other rice types, it elongates more post cooking and remains non-sticky.
  • It easily absorbs the flavor of its companions. Therefore it is specially preferred to cook biryani and other Indian dishes.

All these features make it the king of all rice varieties. Apart from Indian, it is very much used in other Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines as well. Under the larger umbrella of Basmati Rice there are many sub-categorizations, such as Sharbati Sella Basmati Rice, Brown Basmati Rice and Sharbati Steam Basmati Rice etc. You can choose from this gamut and enjoy its superior taste and aroma.
