Losing Weight the Right Way

I’m ashamed to admit this but it’s the truth. In today’s day and age, our health has fallen from the pedestal and is no longer our number one priority. Instead, a new fad has taken over and despite the neglect and detriment that it may inadvertently cause us; it holds its position strong. This craze, which is becoming overwhelmingly popular, is weight loss.

Don’t get me wrong; in a world where over a billion people are now classified as being overweight, this is not an entirely bad thing. However, we are now at a point where our health has taken the passenger seat and the soul intent has to become as skinny as possible rather than as healthy as possible and this is where the problem is.

But who’s to blame for this?

The health and fitness industry for one has a lot of explaining to do. In an area where so many people turn to for help, there is an ever-increasing amount of conflicting evidence being published so it’s easy to see why there is often so much confusion.

The food industry also has a lot of explaining to do, as the number one intention of the companies that produce the food we consume is to increase profit, not to optimize the health of the consumers. This itself is a huge problem that does not look as though it will be fixed anytime soon.

But the biggest problem that exists today lies within each and every one of us. When did it become ok to continually disrespect our bodies and then shift the blame onto any target in sight? When did it become ok to over continually over indulge to the point where we not only became obese, but became so content with it that we just accepted it as a part of life? When did it become ok to continually compromise our own health by becoming over weight, only to compromise our health once again by dramatically losing weight?

So how do we go about weight loss the right way?

As crazy as this may sound, weight loss should not be the number one priority, becoming healthy should. And by becoming healthy, I am referring to becoming healthy from the inside out. This means cutting out any junk, processed or sugary foods. This means making water your beverage of choice. This means moving your body as much as possible instead of slouching on the couch every chance you get. This means reading a book to stimulate your mind instead of zoning out by watching another tv show. This means laughing and enjoying life as much as possible throughout the day and going to bed at a decent hour every night to ensure you get a good nights sleep. Essentially, this means changing all of the habits that have caused you to get to the state you are currently in, and creating new habits, that will allow you to transition into a new, healthier being.

Remember, health should always be your number one priority, not weight loss. Just because you are fit, doesn’t mean you are healthy. Just because you are skinny, doesn’t mean you are healthy. Just because you may look good on the outside, doesn’t mean you are healthy on the inside. Focus on your health, and I can assure you that everything else will follow suit.
