Securing a CRN Registration for piping

Securing a CRN Registration for piping is the most difficult task. As per Canadian B51 standards, it is necessary to register boilers, piping and pressure vessels. Piping registration is hardest because the main problem that one faces prior to registering piping is that although B51 clearly proclaims that there is every need to register piping, it does not state when the piping needs registration. Each province as a result of this lack of standardization of the registration process has come up with its own guidelines when it comes to what a manufacture must to do secure a CRN registration.

What is the procedure for registering a piping system?

Piping registration is done to the address of installation. The one who manufactures must register each of the installation addresses that the piping systems are installed at, even if those systems are all 100% identical in nature. This massive amount of paperwork and red tape can only be avoided if the entire piping system is registered as fittings. Ontario is striving towards the elimination of piping registration by working upon a special category of "portable" systems of piping. With this, there will be no need to register a piping system several times, once for each distinct installation address. The best way to deal with piping fitting registration is to ask the manufacturer to get them registered. One can also use the burst test as allowed by the reviewers and use it as an alternative to CRN registration.

What is the piping system composed of?

A piping system is composed of registered fittings. These items include: elbows, valves, strainers, flanges, hoses, etc. It also includes calculated components such as nozzles and pipe. Items whose dates will expire within one year must not be used for piping registration, as the process requires quite a long time. If piping that will expire in a year is used by mistake, then the user will have to redesign the components right in the middle of trying to get the registration passed.

It is the duty of the owner to ensure safe operation and properly maintain the piping. Operators must be competent enough to use the piping as well. Any equipment used must also undergo regular re-certification and inspection and the owner is responsible for the payment of the fees. In case an accident occurs, ABSA must be immediately reported. As per the law, it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure the effective functioning of the piping. Ontario will accept an ASME stamp if the piping belongs to the ASME section. If the owner already has an ASME PP Stamp, then in that case there is no need for onsite inspection.
