Light bulbs are advised not to be put uncovered into regular trash. When broken, fine particles of glass cause damage when they come into direct contact of skin. These fine particles of glass may rupture skin and it can even blood capillaries. Old style incandescent bulbs are not recyclable, as its glass contains other metals as well. Hence it can’t be recycled into normal glass. It is advised to put them into empty covers of bulbs so as to avoid their breakage. These bulbs can then be put into normal trash or in separate polythene bags and then disposed off. It is best suited to inform local garbage collection centers that trash carries CFL’s or bulbs.

How to manage Fluorescent light bulb disposal?

  1. Contributions of Local garbage service – It’s convenient for everyone to contact their local garbage collection company for CFL’s disposal. By using their service at your doorsteps you avoid the pain in finding and dumping used CFL’s. These garbage agencies then contact recycling centers from where most of the mercury is disposed off and glass and metals are used for recycling. It is the simplest way to dump CFL’s.
  2. Municipality – They are ultimately responsible for disposing CFL’s. Even if local garbage collection agencies try their best to collect used CFL’s from door-to-door, credit goes to municipality for their disposal. They coordinate with various recycling companies and garbage collection centers for disposal and recycling.
  3. Retailers- Reputed retailers who sell CFL’s also make provisions for their disposal. Reason behind, recycling is possible which guarantees profit. These retailers have funds to establish recycling centers. Only concern is to ship these used CFL’s to recycling centers without any harm.
  4. Commercial Services- Several companies provide these services which turn prove out to be very costly for people. Normally, if you have CFL’s 40-50 in number than they would provide services to harmlessly deliver CFL’s to them. Cost of shipping has to be accommodated by people who intend to dispose them. Hence this method is not much popular or advisable.
  5. Non-profit organizations – Several NPO’s are campaigning to collect hazardous used CFL’s and ultimately disposing them safely to recycling centers. These NPO’s have their collection centers wherein people can dispose their CFL’s. These NPO’s are not much popular as their marketing requires funds, which is possible only upto a certain extent. Fluorescent light disposal is also considered as a social cause which is gives them recognition. Environment ministries of some countries grant them funds to run these campaigns. Support pours from all directions, even corporates are taking interest to aid them financially.
