Are Reel Mowers Good Enough to Replace Motors?
Posted: Mar 18, 2015
Not a day passes without a newspaper article that talks about the return of the reel lawn mowers. There is some truth to all this. People have a growing fascinaton for rustic stuff and pushing a lawn mower around is the perfect example of that. What is not so clear is whether reel mower will ever replace motor units. We attempt to answer this question here by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of reel mowers.
One key strength of the reel mower that puts it ahead of power lawn mowers is the total absence of any harm to the environment. You do not have to be genius to see that gas mowers produce tons of carbon emission that pollute the air. What people do not seem to realize is that electric and battery lawn mowers are equally harmful if not more. Only a fraction of the electric energy comes from renewable sources. The rest is produced in power station that run on coal or some sort of oil. You will add to the global fume emission in one way or the other unless you opt for a manual push lawn mower. Needless to say, the green aspect of reel mowers is a potent advantage that will draw more and more people to its side in the coming decades.
Another good thing about push lawn mowers is how quiet they are. We all hate it when we wake up to lawn mower noise and those sensitive about their neighbors hate it even more when they have no choice but start the gasoline mower on a Sunday morning. Electric lawn mowers are so much easier on the ears but they too produce a certain amount of disturbance. A good reel mower on the other is synonymous with peace and harmony with the nature. Once you have the right manual lawn mower at your disposal the smooth and steady sound of the blades trimming the grass will turn out to be the best melody you have ever experienced.
So far, we have discussed why reel lawn mowers are better than power mowers. Let use now see why they will never push aside the motor units completely. Even if you are pushing the best reel mower on the planet, manual lawn mowing will always take more time, resolve and skill than doing the job with a power tool. We all know that few people are likely to muster all three of these at the same time and that sounds like bad news for the reel lawn mower market.
In conclusion, there are pros and cons for reel psuh lawn mowers and we should expect a growing demand for manual gradening equipment. Yet, it is unlikely that power lawn mowers will suffer a major loss of market share in the foreseeable future.
