Mother Nature can be absolutely beautiful but then absolutely destructive in the blink of an eye. Storms are easily one of the biggest causes of home damage in Denver and can result in costly repairs. Luckily, many home owners’ insurance policies will cover hail damage repair and potentially save you hundreds to thousands of dollars. However, if you want your insurance company to cover the costs, you must make sure you file your claim correctly.

STEP 1: Call a Roofer for an Estimate

Your first feeling following a hail storm may be panic – especially if the hail stones are especially large. But before you stress yourself out, relax and remember that you have homeowner’s insurance. A homeowner’s insurance policy can offer a sense of relief when you know you have possible damage from a storm; however, it isn’t always a saving grace.

Insurance policies are notorious for denying claims because they were not filed properly, leaving the homeowner responsible for all hail damage repair costs. If you believe you have roof damage as a result of a hail storm, you must first call a qualified contractor to assess the damage before you can file a claim. Some roof damage in Denver may be obvious but other damage may not be visible from the ground; therefore, it is always a good idea to have a roofer assess your roof following a particularly bad hail storm.

STEP 2: Find Out Whether to File a Claim

A qualified roofing contractor will assess your roof condition and tell you if there is enough damage to warrant an insurance claim. If there is sufficient damage, then you can proceed with filing a claim. If the damage is minimal, then it may be in your best interest to take care of the repairs on your own because filing insurance claims for small damages can actually hurt you in the long run. Often, insurance claims will cause your premium to drastically rise and can even cause your insurance company to drop you if you repeatedly file small claims.

Another thing to consider is your deductible. Your deductible is the amount of money you agreed to pay first before an insurance claim can step in and pay for the remainder repair balance. If you have a high deductible such as $1,000 and the hail damage repair costs less than that amount, it makes no sense to file a claim. Since you would have to pay that amount even if you filed a claim, save yourself the increase in premium and just pay for the repairs on your own.

STEP 3: Allow Your Roofer to Represent You

If you do file a claim, your insurance company will send their own adjuster to assess the damage. It is in your best interest to have a local Denver roofer meet with the insurance adjuster to ensure that your damage is assessed properly. This usually comes at no cost to you as long as you choose that roofer to make the hail damage repairs.

By following these three steps, you can ensure that you properly file a homeowner’s insurance claim and receive the hail damage repairs that you are entitled.
