642-889, Implementing Cisco Service Provider Next-Generation Edge Network Services (SPEDGE) is an exam that checks a candidate’s knowledge of VPN solutions by enabling point of presence to provide Layer 23 and Layer 2 VPNs.

642-889 exam covers IOS XR, Cisco IOS, and IOS XE operating systems. This topic covers the major portion of the exam; 40% of the total exam.

The third topic of the 642-889, Implementing Cisco Service Provider Next-Generation Edge Network Services (SPEDGE) exam is Layer 2 VPNs in Service Provider IP NGN Environments. Sub-topics included under this topic are L2TPv3 VPNs over an IP core network, L2 VPNs (VPLS and AToM) over an MPLS/IP core network, AToM Interworking and implementing AToM on IOS-XE and IOS-XR. This is 19% of the total exam.

The fourth topic of the exam is Cisco Service Provider Next-Generation Edge Network Services exam is Carrier Ethernet. This includes sub-topics like Carrier Ethernet standards and forums (IETF IEEE,MEF), E-Line versus E-LAN versus E-Tree, QinQ tunneling, Provider Backbone Bridge, VPLS versus VPWS, VPLS signaling using BGP or LDP and implementing QinQ on Cisco ME 3400 Series Switches. This topic is approximately 16% of the total exam.
