Modern vs Traditional Celebration of Pongal Festival
Posted: Jan 13, 2026
Traditional Pongal Celebrations
As Tamil Nadu is covered mainly by agricultural areas, it was the biggest celebration in all the houses. Families dispose of the waste and old clothes in a fire as a celebration of Bhogi. The next day, families woke up before sunrise to prepare the pongal in a clay pot using a fire hood in the traditional way. And homes were decorated with mango leaves in doorways and kolam drawn using rice flour. Cattle are worshipped during Mattu Pongal, so the cattle are well decorated by the farmers.
Traditional outfits play a significant role in this celebration. Women wore silk sarees and jasmine flowers, while men wore veshtis. And to make the outfit shine, gold jewelry like bangles, thali chains, and earrings are worn as symbols of prosperity and legacy.
Modern Pongal Celebrations
In modern Pongal celebrations, the lifestyle of people has changed from rural to urban. In many families, they celebrate Pongal at apartments or inside the individual house with simplified rituals followed. Pongal is prepared using readymade mixes, and cooker equipment is used, which is far from modern practice.
In the current generation, Pongal is considered a time to relax, spend time with family, and watch movies on OTT platforms. Watching newly released movies during Pongal, like Jananayam and Parasakthi, has become a popular trend, adding excitement to the holiday and making movie time an integral part of modern Pongal celebrations.
Even though the way of celebration can change, people still prefer to wear new clothes and gold jewelry accessories, but their preference has changed towards lightweight chains and rose gold ornaments, which blend with the traditional look and give a comfortable and modern look

Clothing that beautifully reflects the balance between traditional and modern looks. In traditional-look silk sarees, ethnic wear and vastis were popular in those days. In modern-style fashion, outfits like lehengas and minimally designed clothes were used.
Coming into jewelry trends, it evolved from heavy temple jewelry to minimal, lightweight gold jewelry. Stud earrings, chains, and bangles are now preferred, making gold jewelry an essential part of Pongal fashion even for the younger generation.
Community & Social Media Influence
Earlier, Pongal was celebrated in native places and centred around villages, neighbours, family, and friends. Now, this culture has reduced the social media dominance of the traditional way of celebration. Instagram reels, festival posts, family selfies, online shopping, and ordering food through Zomato and Swiggy changed the culture and traditional practice. Social media also influences fashion trends, festive décor ideas, and jewellery choices.
