TOTY Post-Mortem: A Messy Finale and the Magic (or Madness) of Future Stars
Posted: Feb 08, 2026
To be honest, the "Team of the Year" (TOTY) event ended in such a shambles that I’m still feeling a bit conflicted. Looking back at the recent weeks, the word that keeps coming to mind is "complicated". While we had a few bright spots like the Wilson SBC, which felt like genuine value for the community, the overall experience was a slog. Major SBCs like Messi and Ronaldo were priced so high that they felt inaccessible to the average player. To make matters worse, the pack weight for high-rated fodder—specifically those crucial 90-rated cards—was significantly lower than last year. I remember crafting Gullit in a single night last year, but this year, it took me days just to scratch the surface of the Messi and Ronaldo requirements.
The "Blue-less King" and the Great NerfThe "Evolution" (Evo) system was another massive disappointment, and I’m tempted to give it a zero. The planning felt incredibly stingy; the flagship "Double PlayStyle+" Evos had almost no room for creative choices, and EA seemed intent on gatekeeping Silver Legends to protect their pack sales. It wasn't a positive "brain-burning" experience where you choose between two great options; it was a struggle to find anything worth the effort.
Talking about everyone’s heartbreaking pack opening experience, I have to poke fun at myself too. In my community, the "Blue-less Kings"—those who didn't pack a single TOTY despite heavy grinding—were everywhere. I personally completed over 1,500 SBCs, including Premium League and TOTY upgrades, and I didn't even see a "fake blue" like Russo on day one. By the time the event ended, the "infinite grind" was dead, replaced by a 10-time daily limit that felt like a slap in the face to dedicated players. It’s honestly been the worst TOTY experience I’ve had since 2019.
Future Stars: The New Meta and The HitsThankfully, we’ve moved on to Future Stars, where the biggest trend is the widespread rollout of Double PlayStyle+ cards. In this new batch, a few cards have really caught my eye:
Xavi: He’s received a massive upgrade, finally getting shooting PlayStyles and the "Hook" (Intercept) to match his elite passing. In a meta that favors agile, small-model players, he’s a dream.
Baresi: This card is a total transformation. EA boosted his Pace by a staggering 14 points and gave him Intercept+ and Block+. He’s finally gone from a "meme" to a genuine wall in defense.
A. Fee: She’s arguably the first true "LB King" of the year, with a million-plus price tag to match her incredible PlayStyle+ combo of Intercept and Pinged Pass.
Lammens: For Manchester United fans, he’s a must-try. With a 193cm frame and solid AI, he provides a level of stability in goal that’s hard to find.
Of course, the new event isn't perfect. Some prices are nonsensical—Chelsea’s Estevao is sitting at 6 million FC coins, yet his stats barely look better than his previous Evo version. Then there’s Doue, who is a "stat merchant" missing the LM secondary position and crucial PlayStyles like Power Shot.
The most infuriating part, however, is the Token Objectives. The requirements are baffling: headers, long shots, and chip shots. Instead of letting us enjoy the game, EA is forcing us into tedious, "brainless" grinds just to pull players back after a disappointing TOTY. It’s a frustrating way to end an already exhausting season. At the end of the day, remember to keep a level head—if the game isn't making you happy, it's okay to take a break.
