DIY Installation of boat steering kit
Posted: Feb 22, 2026
How to install a new boat steering system step-by-step.
Steps for the Installation of the Boat Steering System Smoothly
The only effective means to restore effortless control of a vessel is to upgrade to a high-performance boat steering system. Whether one upgrades from a mechanical system to a more efficient hydraulic system or installs a Glydus Power Assist system, accuracy matters.
Follow this streamlined guide to ensure a professional-grade installation.
Step 1: Preparation and Helm Mounting
Ensure that your outboard steering kit is compatible with your engine's horsepower rating.
Remove the Old System: Disconnect the old cable or hydraulic lines.
Position the Template: Use the provided Glydus mounting template to mark the mounting holes.
Install the Helm: First, secure the helm pump to the dash. When in a tilt steering setup, the gear should be able to move freely in any of the five positions without touching the dashboard.
Step 2: Routing the Hydraulic Lines:
A smooth routing eliminates any "kink" that would provide stiff steering.
Pathing: Run the high-pressure hoses from the helm to the transom. Avoid sharp bends.
Protection: Use grommets to protect areas where hydraulic hoses pass through bulkheads to avoid fraying due to the friction of your hydraulic steering system’s components.
Step 3: Attaching the Cylinder
The cylinder is the "heart" of your manoeuvrability.
Grease the Support Rod: Apply marine-grade grease to the engine tilt tube.
Mount the Cylinder: The cylinder rod should be inserted into the tilt tube, and the link arm should be connected to the tiller bolt on the engine.
Torque to Spec: Ensure that all bolts are tightened properly to withstand high torque loads.
Step 4: Filling & Bleeding.
Purging (removing the air) of the system is the final step. Use Glydus hydraulic fluid and the bleeding kit supplied with the kit. Turn the steering wheel as mentioned in the installation manual slowly while tapping the hydraulic bleeder valves on the cylinder until the air is out.
Once you have finished the process of purging, you are ready to go! We offer a wide range of power-assisted and hydraulic boat steering systems for outboard and inboard applications.
