For Bear Watching, Finland is Superb
Posted: Apr 20, 2015
If you're an avid wildlife watcher and enjoy holidays that focus on exploring the world of wonderful mammals and birdlife, you'll relish the opportunity to go bear watching. Finland is one of the best destinations in Europe to see the majestic Brown Bear, and if you book with a dedicated wildlife company that specialises in bear watching, Finland’s stunning scenery will be the setting for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Martinselkonen Nature Reserve
One of the places the top companies include on their itinerary is Martinselkonen Nature Reserve, which is located close to the border of Russia, in Suomussalmi in the east of the country. Well known for its tranquil atmosphere and wilderness landscapes, this reserve is a highly recommended place to observe the Brown Bears, with more than 20 seen on occasion in a single night. Only opening its doors to the wildlife loving public in 1996, the reserve is now popular with travel companies specialising in wildlife experiences.
The Brown Bears of Finland
Normally waking from their long hibernation in April when there is still snow on the ground, it is late spring when the Brown Bears begin to make an appearance. Weather conditions do affect the timing of their awakening, however, and sometimes they can be seen as early as March. By the beginning of May their foraging really begins to increase, and their body fat stores that have been used up in the winter are replenished.
Rutting starts at the end of May, and it is at this time that the Brown Bears are most active. Feeding is not a priority, so feeding sites become less reliable viewing locations, however the animals are much more energetic. Aggression is seen amongst males and some visitors may even be lucky enough to see them mating. May and June are the best months to see the mating rituals but July too is also a good month for bear watching. Finland’s long summer evenings at this time of year provide the perfect conditions for wildlife watching, and in July feeding begins again with gusto. From the hides at the reserve you will more than likely be able to observe numerous Brown Bears feeding, socialising and interacting with their cubs. July and August are the best time to see the small cubs.
While bear watching in Finland, an abundance of birdlife can also be seen around Martinselkonen. Look out for the Woodpeckers, the Siberian Jay and Rustic Bunting, as well as the Ural Owls, Tengmalm’s Pygmy and Pied Flycatcher. Around the lodge there are feeders that attract the Bullfinches and Siskins, so when you are relaxing during the quiet daytimes, there is plenty to look out for.
