Bear Watching – Europe's Best Destinations
Posted: Apr 20, 2015
If you're looking for a dedicated wildlife holiday, why not consider bear watching? Europe has some prime destinations, including Finland and Sweden.
Those who choose Sweden are in for a real treat, with a host of stunning scenery and the opportunity to observe the animals while keeping warm and dry in a purpose built hide. The European Brown Bear is a magnificent creature, which is, unfortunately, still hunted in parts of Scandinavia. However, with more and more people heading off on nature-based holidays in hopes of a sighting, awareness of their plight is being raised.
Here's what you can expect if you choose one of the specialised itineraries that take you to Sweden.
Sweden - Bear Watching
Europe and the rest of the world have woken up to a prime destination in central Sweden where you will experience the optimal chances of a sighting. With hospitable local hosts that offer not only informative guiding but also wonderful cooking, days at the retreat will be spent exploring the taiga forests, strolling along lakeshores and climbing the rolling hills that surround the accommodation. Indeed, this tranquil and peaceful location is perfect for wildlife sightings and during the day, you will more than likely be able to spot Red Squirrel, Roe Deer and Elk. If you enjoy bird watching you should watch out for the Black-throated Diver, Goldeneye, Wood Sandpiper and Brambling.
Of course, in the evening it's all about the bears. You will head out to a purpose built hide, equipped with comfy chairs, beds and a toilet. The hide is simple but perfect for bear watching. Europe is famous for its population of Brown Bears and these will definitely be the focus of the night. Many nights see up to 10 of the animals come to feed outside the hide at one time, and it is not uncommon to see even more than that. If by chance you are not lucky enough to get a sighting, there will be the chance to spend another night in the hide.
Back at the lodge you'll dine on delicious meals made from organic ingredients, many of which are found in the forest. A stay in this fabulous lodge sees groups limited to only eight people, so the experience is much more personal. While the animals can, of course, can be seen in other parts of the world, Sweden assures you the very best opportunities for bear watching. Europe is just a few hours from the UK, so this kind of nature focused holiday is becoming more and more accessible to ordinary travellers.
