Why Bass Music Mastering Is Its Own Discipline

Most producers treat mastering as a final polish. One EQ curve, one limiter, done. That approach works fine for a lot of genres. It falls apart the moment sub-bass and 808s enter the picture.

Bass-heavy genres - dubstep, drum and bass, trap, UK garage, grime, put more energy into 20Hz to 100Hz than almost any other style of music. That low end carries the emotional weight of the track. It's also the hardest range to control, because most monitoring setups (and most mastering engineers, honestly) aren't built to hear it accurately. You can master a track that sounds massive on a club system and translates as mush on a phone speaker, or the reverse: tight and controlled in the studio, then thin and lifeless on a soundsystem. Getting both right at once is the actual job.

The core problem is mono compatibility. Sub frequencies below roughly 100-120Hz need to sit in mono, or the low end folds unpredictably when a track gets played on a system that sums to mono, which is more systems than people assume. A mastering engineer working across this genre needs to check phase correlation constantly, not just glance at a meter once and move on. Stereo width above the bass, mono below it that split has to be deliberate, not accidental.

Then there's headroom management. Bass music tends to get pushed loud, and loud plus heavy low end is a fast way to eat your limiter's headroom before the mix even gets interesting. A mastering engineer who specialises in this space knows how to shape the low end with multiband compression before limiting, rather than throwing everything at a brickwall limiter and hoping. That's the difference between a master that sounds loud and one that sounds loud and clean.

Frequency masking is the other big one. Kick and bass sit close together in a bass-heavy mix, and if they're not separated with intent - sidechaining, careful EQ carving, sometimes just better arrangement decisions upstream, the low end turns to sludge no amount of mastering can fully rescue. A good engineer will flag this back to the producer rather than trying to EQ around a mix problem that shouldn't be a mastering problem in the first place.

This is really why genre-specific experience matters more in mastering than people give it credit for. Someone who's spent years mastering acoustic or pop material can be a brilliant engineer and still misjudge what a drum and bass track needs in the sub range, simply because they haven't built the reference points for it.
