Medical Examination Process After Sarkari Result: Common Reasons for Medical Rejection
Posted: Sep 06, 2026
Although it is a great milestone to clear the written exam and have your name in the Sarkari Result, many government jobs require the candidate to pass the prescribed medical check-up in order to get the selection. Medical fitness is especially significant for police, defence, paramilitary, railway and transport jobs, field jobs, etc. Medical fitness is especially significant in police, defence, para-military, railway, transport, field jobs etc. Specific medical requirements are different for the different departments and posts. The medical standards for Railway posts, for instance, may vary according to medical category; and CAPF recruitment is subject to set uniform medical guidelines.
Candidates checking their Sarkari Result should also understand the medical requirements associated with their specific post, as clearing the written examination does not always guarantee final selection.
What Happens in the Medical Examination?
Shortlisted candidates may also be sent for the conduct of the Medical Examination in addition to written examination, Physical test, skill test or other selection stage. The medical examination shall normally be carried out by the Board of Authorized Medical personnel.
Based on the post, it may comprise:
- General physical examination
- Height & weight measurement
- Blood pressure and pulse rate examination
- Vision and colour vision test
- Examining hearing
- Limbs, joints, and spine examination
- Chest and respiratory system examination
- Examination for any specific disease
- Past injuries or surgery examination
- Other tests wherever necessary
The criteria for medical fitness varies with the post applied for; hence, one should not presume that the requirements for one job in the government are the same for all other jobs. This can be seen from SSC 2026 recruitment material, which states that the medical examination for some of the posts is conducted based on the standard required for that particular service/job profile.
Common Reasons for Medical Rejection in Government Jobs
1. Poor Eyesight or Failure to Meet Vision Standards
Vision problems are some of the critical health problems in many recruitments by government agencies. The acceptable standard of eyesight varies greatly from one position to another.
In railway categories, for example, there are variations in the distance vision and near vision criteria with stringent criteria being set for positions whose safety is an issue. Certain categories even have criteria that demand candidates to take the colour vision test, binocular vision test, field of vision test, and night vision test.
Hence, having spectacles does not necessarily translate to failure of health criteria. The question is whether your vision meets the required standard for your position.
2. Colour Blindness
Colour Vision Deficiency may pose an issue in occupations where there is a need for discrimination of signals, lights, colours, or safety indicators.
This becomes important in some railway and technical/safety occupations. It depends upon the recruitment notification whether the colour vision is required and what medical category is needed.
One should thus verify his/her own post’s medical category rather than depending on general information found online.
3. Knock Knees and Other Orthopaedic Problems
The existence of physical deformities on the legs, knees, feet, or even on the spine can cause rejection if they affect the ability of the person to undertake the responsibilities of the job.
Deformities like knock knees, bowed legs, flat feet, limited joint mobility, or any spinal deformity may be looked into during the medical examination. The gravity of the problem and the standard required for the position are essential. A small physical deformation is not necessarily a disqualifying factor.
4. Hearing Problems
Hearing tests may be conducted on the candidates, especially those whose job demands good hearing and good performance.
Any candidate who fails to meet the hearing requirement will not be found fit since the regulations of recruitment specify certain standards for the hearing test.
5. Chronic or Serious Medical Conditions
The Medical Board could evaluate whether the candidate has any problem which could impair the efficiency in performing his duties.
It is usually a standard in governmental recruitment to check whether the candidate is healthy enough physically and whether there is a possibility that he could have any physical problem, which could impede his job performance. As an example, in SSC recruitment, it is clearly mentioned that physical fitness could be one of the conditions of appointment in certain posts.
But being physically unfit doesn’t automatically disqualify the candidate from every governmental job.
6. Recent Surgery or Certain Operations
Past surgery does not automatically constitute an absolute disqualification for the future. But certain recruitment policies might insist on the complete recovery of a candidate before their recruitment.
For instance, certain medical conditions of BRO/GREF stipulate that candidates who have undergone particular abdominal surgery are unqualified for a certain period. Candidates can keep copies of their medical papers if needed.
7. Physical Standards Below the Prescribed Requirement
Some of these jobs may have certain mandatory requirements for height, chest size, or other physical parameters. In case the candidate fails to comply with the specified requirement, they might be declared unfit.
Some of these recruitment requirements allow candidates who dispute certain physical measurements to go through the process of a prescribed re-measurement; whereas some of the recruitment requirements do not allow any appeals. It is hence important for the candidate to read the recruitment notification carefully.
Temporary Unfit vs Permanent Unfit
The Temporary Unfit category candidate may have a chance of getting a review or re-examination after the period mentioned, subject to the recruitment norms.
Permanent Unfit, in most cases, implies that the Medical Board has found the candidate not fulfilling the required medical standards. The possibility of getting a Review Medical Examination (RME) or filing a complaint rests totally on the recruitment norms.
In the case of CAPF and Assam Rifles recruitment, it was clarified by SSC in the year 2026 that revised MHA guidelines will be followed for Detailed Medical Examination & Review Medical Examination for the particular recruitment.
How to Avoid Medical Rejection?
Some measures that one can undertake prior to the medical test include:
- Reading the official notification and noting the medical criteria for the specific position.
- Getting a check on your eyesight if the post requires a certain level of vision.
- Conducting a colour vision test if the post has operational, signalling or safety responsibilities.
- Keeping all medical reports and documents pertaining to surgery or other treatments done in the past.
- Keeping fit and avoiding any crash dieting prior to the test.
- Sleeping adequately and keeping hydrated.
- Never hiding any previous medical history when asked by the authorized Medical Board.
- In case you are found medically unfit, go through the official notification for chances of reviewing/appealing.
Final Words
Medical fitness test form an integral part of the last stage of many Sarkari Jobs. Passing the written Exams and confirming the Sarkari Result is no assurance of selection if the post has some specific medical criteria. Medical issues related to vision, colour blindness, hearing ability, orthopaedic disorders, body measurements and some medical ailments could be the reason behind rejection. It is pertinent to mention that there is no one size fits all kind of medical criterion for government jobs. Requirements for railway, CAPF, defence, police service and other services can be different from each other.
