Concrete pile and concrete pole are both used for different construction purposes and applications. They have their own functions but they share the same qualities of being great options in the building industry. Today, the pre-stressed concrete poles are also gaining the interest of many builders and for good reasons.

For the past few decades, the pre-stressed concrete pole has become more famous than ever, finally replacing the typical poles that are made of steel, reinforced concrete or steel. It was way back in 1933 when the earliest concrete poles of this type have been introduced to the market and since then, it has earned its spot as the top choice for different purposes.

Most of the time, the pre-stressed concrete poles are being mass produced and are commonly utilized in many countries all over the world for antenna masts, power transmission and others. The primary benefits that one can expect from the pre-stressed concrete poles include the following:

  • Great resistance to the freeze and thaw effects during colder seasons.
  • Easy transportation and handling because of lesser self-weight.
  • Resistance to corrosion during conditions as well as erosion when used in the desert regions.
  • Easy installation.
  • Fire resistance.
  • Neat and clean appearance.
  • Improved rigidity and enhanced crack resistance.

These benefits are the reason why concrete poles are now being promoted to be used in different parts of the globe. There are many concrete pole manufacturers and precast concrete suppliers that create their poles using the long line method.

The highest resistance amount in a pole is usually needed at its base and for this reason, the maximum cross sectional area is needed at its base section. The poles are commonly tapered with a hollow core in order to decrease their weight. For the small lengths that range to 12 meters in length, rectangular or square sections are commonly provided.

This kind of shapes is very easy to transport and construct. The I-section shapes are also used in the poles. But, these have more risks of suffering from more corrosion since a larger spot on the surface may be more exposed to the environment. For the large lengths concrete poles, the tubular sections are more preferred.

In general, a pre-stressed concrete pole is being designed as a member with a uniform pre-stress since it will be subjected to the bending moments of the same magnitude in the opposite directions. Concrete poles are also designed for other critical load combinations, such as:

  • Combined torsion and bending because of eccentric wire snapping.
  • Bending because of wind load on exposed faces and cable.
  • Maximum torsion because of skew wire snapping.
  • Erection and handling stresses in concrete poles.
  • Bending because of the failure of the wires on a single side of the pole.

With the use of topnotch concrete pole making machine, the best poles are formed and become useful for various functions and purposes in various countries.
