Trying Something New On Your Last Minute Ski Holidays
Posted: May 19, 2015
There's something quite satisfying about booking cheeky last minute ski holidays, and getting a bargain winter holiday! When you book one of the excellent book your last minute ski holidays in the French Alps you'll still be able to get the very best of what the area has to offer, including a number of different family activities. Heading to the Meribel area offers you the best of challenging slopes, a family friendly location, and plenty of fun to be had!
Nordic Skiing
If the idea of racing down the highest slopes of the French Alps doesn't appeal to your young family, that's okay. You can still go ahead and book those last minute ski holidays and rest assured that there are plenty of other activities to try, like Nordic skiing. Nordic skiing is a type of skiing where the heel of the boot is not attached to the ski. This encompasses cross country skiing, where you can go over relatively easy hills and trails; the key here is that skiers rely on their own power for movement and not lifts or a downhill track. Another Nordic skiing activity that would work well for older children is an introduction to ski jumping. Encourage them to take it slowly and start with easy jumps, so they can get used to the way the Nordic boot flicks up in the heel first.
Ski Joering (or Skijoring)
Ski joering is a sport that can really be really thrilling and it's available in many resorts that offer last minute ski holidays, including Meribel. Ski joering entails the skier being pulled by a horse, dogs, or even a motor vehicle. While this can be tricky for the really young children (and beginner adults!), taking lessons with your family is a great way to cheer each other on and have a bit of friendly competition. Plus, for the smaller children, there is the added bonus of getting the spend time with horses or dogs, which invariably goes down well.
Sledging
Though, initially, you may not think that sledging is exciting enough, you could be in for a surprise! In the Alps, they take sledging very seriously - and it is not just for children! (Although is a particularly child-friendly sport.) Booking one of the last minute ski holidays to a place like Meribel, where the sledging conditions are absolutely perfect makes for a very special time for the family. You can ride down the smaller hills with your younger children, or you can race one another down the steeper hills and really try to get up some speed. Since sledging is a real social activity in Meribel, it is also a great way to get to meet others, have fun with a larger group, and even compete together as a family.
