What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia has been taken as one of modern times' most overlooked ailments with more than 75% of its sufferers not even aware that they are carrying it. Chlamydia badly affects million people all over the world, the majority of which are teenagers and young adults. It is basically a sexually transmitted disease (often called as STD) and a bacterial infection caused by chlamydia trachomatis. This kind of infection can be spread through any form of sexual contact can affect both men and women to a greater extent.
Chlamydia is also termed a silent disease, as it tends to spread silently without symptoms for the first few weeks. The disease can cause symptoms which range from rectal inflammation to itching and a burning sensation while urinating. If left untreated, it can result to permanent damage to the urinary tract and the reproductive organ. However, the signs of chlamydia in women and men may differ as it generally affects the genital areas.
Symptoms of chlamydia in women:
It has been seen in the researches that chlamydia if not treated properly or left untreated, can infect women’s reproductive parts. As per the researches and studies, chlamydia infection moves towards the cervix affecting a major part of the reproductive system such as Fallopian tubes and uterus. In some cases, most of the women who suffer from chlamydia can even get affected by PID well-known as pelvic inflammatory disease. Due to this disease, they may face many health problems, including bleeding, constant pains in pelvic, discharge, wrong pregnancy i.e. pregnancy in the Fallopian tubes and even it can lead to infertility in women.
Generally symptoms of chlamydia in women are not easily detectable, but if symptoms are present, they may include:
- An unusual vaginal discharge
- An irritating, or burning sensation while urinating
- Pain while having sex
- Bleeding after sex
- Lower abdominal pain.
