Whether it is playing cowboys, skiing, or hiking the many fantastic trails, Aspen, in Colorado, offers a diverse array of exciting activities to enjoy on family adventure holidays. Regardless of the season, the mountains provide perfect conditions for enjoying the great outdoors in a variety of ways.

The following suggestions are perfect for active family adventure holidays.

Hiking to the Grottos Trail of Independence Pass

Summer in Aspen is an ideal time for a spot of hiking, and one of the most popular destinations is the Grotto Loop Trail near Independence Pass. The route, which is a combination of short but complex trails, is easy enough for even the younger members of the family. In fact, there is even a wheelchair-accessible trail so even those with a disability won't miss out on the beauty of the Roaring Fork River and its many quaint swimming spots. Other spots to enjoy while hiking the Grottos Loop Trail include the Ice Caves, which are beautiful water-carved caves, and Lincoln Creek, which is also a the perfect place to stop for a swim.

Skiing at Snowmass

Aspen also has a lot to offer during the winter – if not more so. Well-known all over the world for its excellent skiing spots, this Colorado gem is home to Snowmass, a massive ski resort complex with the notoriety of having the longest vertical drop in the United States.

For those on family adventure holidays looking for a little variety, Snowmass also has an incredibly varied terrain - perfect for beginner skiers as well as more experienced ones. Apart from skiing, Snowmass also has guided nature tours throughout the entire year, which allows families a panoramic view of the mountains and serves as a nice break from the more adventurous activities.

Biking the Government Trail

Another enjoyable activity to try on family adventure holidays in Aspen is mountain biking. The Government Trail is a popular route, and this single track starts from the Tiehack Lift at Buttermilk and offers nine miles of gorgeous, scenic views over Aspen. Not only is the downhill ride a fun route to bike with younger members of the family, it also allows more experienced bikers to experience the more technical sections of the trail. The uphill climb, while obviously more challenging, is also incredibly rewarding. While it can be tricky at first, those who take up the challenge of the Government Trail will relish the thrills of this fantastic and picturesque trail.
