Compact cars are one of the top selling car categories on the market. This is because they are generally affordable, fuel-efficient, family friendly, and are great especially in urban areas.

Although every major car brand offers compact car model, this article we will review the top two compact options available in today’s market - the Chevy Cruze and the Ford Fiesta. The review is based onaffordability, handling, fuel efficiency, and of course power.

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze:

Ranked number 2: the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze delivers strong performance and a high-quality, roomy interior for a compact car. Reviewers also like its new fuel-efficient diesel engine option.

The Chevrolet Cruze offers three engine options: a base four-cylinder, a turbocharged four-cylinder and a turbo diesel four-cylinder. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is optional. A different six-speed automatic transmission comes on the diesel model. The base Cruze gets up to 25/36-mpg city/highway.

The diesel Cruze gets 27/46 mpg, which is great for a compact car. Test drivers say the Cruze with the base four-cylinder engine can feel a little weak from a stop, but they’re pleased with the power from the turbocharged four-cylinder and new turbo diesel, which they say are plenty powerful overall. The Cruze is also commended for its nimble handling and comfortable ride. The base price for this car is $18,122 and tops out at $25,448.

The Ford Fiesta

The number one best compact car is the Ford Fiesta. It hasfront-wheel-drive and is a five-passenger vehicle. The Fiesta has a 1.6-litre four-cylinder gas engine (120 horsepower and 112 pound-feet of torque) and has 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder with 123 hp and 148 lb-ft option.Ford is promising it will be “the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car available in North America.”A high-performance (197 hp and 202 lb-ft, with 93 octane gas) 1.6L turbo-four for the also-new Fiesta ST hot hatch are being added to the menu.

Ford is calling the outside of the 2014 Fiesta the ‘new face of Ford” which looks a lot like “the current face of Aston Martin.” Mid-cycle interior refinements include optional leather trim, heated front seats, redesigned center console design and a revised My Ford Touch infotainment system that doesn’t seem like an improvement. The touchscreen has shrunk, making the on-screen graphics smaller and harder to read and activate. Plus, the screen is beyond this average-sized writer’s arm length. This little beauty comes in at a base price of $15,519.

With the new look, spacious interior and low price point, it’s no wonder that the Ford Fiesta is ranked number one in the compact car category. Ford has always been a force in this market but they have truly outdone themselves with the 2014 Ford Fiesta.

If you are in the market for a new reasonable priced compact car, the Cruze and the Fiesta give you the best bang for your buck. Take them both out for a test drive and see what you think.
