A Muslim Man's Clothing Guide
Posted: Jun 16, 2015
One of the most common religions in the world, Islam is known for the outstanding principles it follows. There is a code of conduct that both Muslim men and women need to follow. From eating to dressing, every job needs to be done by following certain protocols.
Islamic clothes for men and women both, are designed by giving special attention to simplicity and modesty. Hence, most of these dresses are loose and multi-layered, and are made from a thick fabric. Moreover, the colors are not too bright and there are no flashy designs on the clothes. Islamic dresses for men include shirt or kameez, dishdasha or thobes, scarves, gutra, bisht, gahfiya, kurtas, kufis and swimwears.
Shirt or Kameez
Loose and comfortable, these dresses are worn by Muslim men on formal, casual, as well as traditional occasions. Shirts or kameez extends till the knee and have buttons on the front. These can be paired with loose-fitting jeans or trousers.
Kurtas
This outfit is worn mostly for traditional functions. Normally, it extends till the knee of the wearer. Occasionally, it can be worn for a casual look as well.
Dishdashas or Thobes
Dishdasha is a common dress worn by Muslim men. The other name for dishdasha is "thobe". It is a robe that has long sleeves and extends till the ankle of the wearer. Muslim men are not to allowed to wear any dress that extends below the ankle. Muslim men often wear dishdashas while playing sports. During this time, the hems of the dishdasha are pulled upwards and tucked at the waist.
Gutra and Gahfiya
Gutra is a piece of cloth in the shape of a square. Muslim men fold this cloth in half to make a triangle, and place it on the shoulders. The color choice for gutras varies according to the season. For instance, a white gutra is suitable for summers and a red one is apt for winters. Gutra is often accompanied by a close-fitting knit cap known as gahfiya. It keeps the gutra in place.
There are some guidelines Muslim men can follow to look stylish and majestic in modest dresses. Here are some of those:
-Dress Appropriately for any Occasion
There is a difference between dressing up for shopping and dressing to offer prayers in masjid. While a kameez suits casual occasions, dishdashas are apt to be worn during prayers. On traditional occasions, the outfit needs to be as simple as possible.
-Maintain Hygiene
Hygiene is an important aspect for any Islamic outfit. The dresses worn by Muslim men should be neat and tidy. One should avoid wearing stained or wrinkled clothes...
