Delhi is the capital of India. The city is the most significant city in the country as is the home to all of the political and judicial bodies. During the rule of the British the city was a district province of the Punjab state. It was only in 1911 when the city became the capital of British India. Following the country's independence the city became the capital city of free India. At the meantime, the city and its neighborhoods today are marked by numerous citadels, tombs, forts, palaces, and other iconic monuments. Meanwhile, Delhi has always remained at the forefront in terms of tourism. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations and has attracted tourists since decades.
