Intermodal freight transportation means the transportation of freight which is been done in intermodal cargo containers, using numerous ways of container transportation, which includes rail, truck, ship and barge. In this process of transportation, the main freight is not handled by itself as it is deported from one transportation way to another, but preferably whole cargo containers and their stuff are deported from truck to rail, or from truck to ship/barge, or from rail to ship/barge, or from barge/ship to truck, etc.

Here are some of the advantages of container transportation:

Small or no harm- it means that when a cargo is nicely packed and secured in a container, there is no damage shall happen to the container while it is in motion.

Less labour cost- this means that when the cargo is loaded in the container then the labours are require and apart from that when the container reaches its destination, then to unload the container the labours are required.

While shipping the handling part is eliminated- which means once the container is loaded with its contents packed and secured, the container will not be opened for any reason till it reaches its destination.

Different types of transportation and its flexibility- this means that containers could be deported from ships to overload transport such as trains or trucks or also to barges for river transport. Barges are used to deport containerized stuff on main river systems like the Mississippi River in the United States of America and the Rhein River in Germany which is also known as the international container shipping.

Specialized Containers- there are different types of containers designed to deport different kinds of cargo which includes frozen materials, liquids, liquefied or compressed gases, mini containers for smaller loads of material. There also some specially designed containers for deporting livestock, tiling containers which helps to unload the grains much easier and faster. You will also get containers which have fans and blowers built in and known as fan-tainers, you also get containers which have hanging facility available they are called hang-tainers.

Small or No Theft- the probability of theft or pilferage has been reduced or even eliminated when the cargo is deported in sealed containers.

Time Saving and improved efficiency- the use of containers means loading and unloading ships and barges faster which helps in saving time in port and it is also and improved efficiency. The modern technology has given us cranes which helps us to move our containers to given destination is quicker way.

Some of the disadvantages of intermodal freight transport include:

Not suitable for deporting smaller shipments because of the cost as it is very expensive to load half containers.Heavy loads could cause road damage. There could be Delays in deliveries. Additional Costs at harbour may crop up.
