Coimbatore is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu. It is known as the ‘Manchestar of South India’ due to its large production of cotton and presence of textiles industry. Coimbatore is the pleasant mix of a busy city and a small town ease. Located on the coast of river Noyyal, Coimbatore is a very rejuvenating place and a good escape for a weekend. It is the nearest large city to Ooty and Chennai is 500 km away from the township. With its other name Kovai, it is also known as Koneyammanputhhur, which means ‘the birth place of the Goddess’. The city is becoming a popular tourist destination, as Ooty, Valparai and Coonoor are at a close proximity. Hotels in Coimbatore are always available, however, during the peak season it is good to book rooms before visiting the place.

Coimbatore dates back to the Sangam Age. It has a deep rooted history and the city was ruled by different dynasty at the different times of history. However, it is after the downfall of Tipu Sultan that the city came under the British Raj. The name Coimbatore was given by the British. A unique dialect of Tamil, Kongu is the main language spoken here. English is also largely used, so, it is not a problem for a tourist to interact.

Coimbatore is more diverse than other cities in Tamil Nadu. It beholds both the traditional and cosmopolitan essence equally. Few popular festivals of Coimbatore include The Natyajali Festival, which is a special festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. Dance and music are performed for five days at Perur Patteeswara Swamy Temple during the Mahashivratri and it is one of the significant celebrations in Coimbatore. Koniamman Car Festival is another significant festival held in March, where the devotees start a procession and pull the Chariot from Koniamman temple through the important paths of the city. There are many wonderful tourist spots in Coimbatore. Kovai Kutralam, Ramar Temple, Singanallur Lake, Noyyal River, Monkey Falls, etc will satisfy your weekend trip.

Coimbatore’s primary industries are engineering and textiles. It is the second largest software producer in the state after Chennai. It supplies two-thirds of India’s requirements of motors and pumps and also known as "the Pump City". Being such a major commercial activity centre and a tourist hub, there are enough 3 star hotels in Coimbatore to attend to accommodation needs of the visitors. Tamara Resort, Heritage Inn, Cag Pride, and Rathna Residency are some popular hotels in Coimbatore.

A weekend trip in the lap of nature is bound to be memorable. Coimbatore is one of the exciting and fun-filled cities of Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore Airport is 12 km from the township. Daily flights connect the Coimbatore with major cities of the country. Coimbatore is linked up by rail to Mettupalayam. The intra-state bus service is good. Taxi and auto-rickshaws are available for sightseeing. Hotels in Coimbatore also provide cars for sightseeing, provided you book rooms before reaching the place. The best time to visit Coimbatore is from September to March.
