Every car driver has heard a horror story of someone getting ripped off by an auto mechanic. However, in a terrible situation, a good, reliable mechanic can be your best friend. So where and how do you find these angels of the auto world? Here are 6 ways to make sure you’ve found a reliable and trustworthy mechanic.

Tip 1) Get familiar with your car and your local auto servicers

Read your owner's manual to become familiar with your vehicle and follow the manufacturer's suggested service schedule. This way you can start shopping for a repair facility before you need one and can make better decisions because you are not rushed or in a panic because your car has broken down.

Tip 2) Find a shop that specializes in your brand of car

Many garages are experts on certain makes of cars. Those that focus on your type or brand are more likely to have the latest training, equipment and parts to maintain and repair your vehicle quickly and properly.

Tip 3) Check for certification

Your mechanic and shop should be certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, or ASE. You may be asking: “what exactly is the ASE?” They are a not-for-profit organization that certifies automotive professionals to ensure quality of vehicle repair and service testing. Always ask about the shops certification before trusting them with your vehicle.

Tip 4) Shop around

It is important to not be making this decision when your engine blows and you need to fix is as soon as possible. Rather look for the right mechanic before you are forced to hit the panic button. Shop around and make sure the mechanic you choose understands the brand of your car and has the proper certifications. Ask your friends, family and neighbors for recommendations; word of mouth is often the best way to go about finding a reliable mechanic.

Tip 5) Always get it in writing

For starters, be sure to get a written quote before any work is done. Ask for a detailed quote that spells out exactly what work will be done and at what price. Request a phone call for approval if costs increase by 10 percent or more as the work is being done. Ask for a written warranty for the repairs and be sure to keep all paperwork somewhere safe in the event there is a problem down the road.

Tip 6) Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Unless you’re a car guy or girl, when the mechanic explains the issue and what they will need to do to fix it, it often times sounds like they are speaking a different language. Don’t be scared to ask them to explain something again or actually show you the problem and how they will fix it.

The truth is, there are mechanics out there who will try to take advantage of you. Always do your research, shop around and be proactive. If there is an emergency you will be glad to know you are in good hands with a reliable, trustworthy auto mechanic.

Rocky Malforn has been an auto mechanic for over 20 years, he loves working on older junk cars and can be found on most weekends working on a Rebuilt Engine or Transmission Systema name="_GoBack".
