Sheets are supposed to be used for a length of time, and hence, can be viewed as an investment. And because we must live with them for some time, it is important to consider the benefits and whether the sheets will serve our personal and lifestyle needs.

A microfiber sheet is a man-made material made of very fine fibers. The thickness of fibers is defined by the term Denier; a high denier point indicates a thicker sheet than a lower denier point. A microfiber sheet set is weaved out of fiber that is less than 1 denier in diameter, which is finer than fine silk that measures 1.25 deniers. Microfiber can be made in the lab out of wood pulp, or polyester and nylon polymers. Although very thin, microfiber sheets are strong, exceptionally smooth and comfortable, and highly durable.

A misconception is that if a sheet is not pure cotton, there can be pilling. Pilling depends on two processes that a sheet must undergo during the finishing stage: Singeing and Mercerizing. By singeing, the tiny fuzz on the sheet is burned off; and mercerizing improves the strength and luster of the sheets. So pilling can happen to any sheet does not go through this process. Manufacturers of low cost sheets with low thread count usually avoid these processes to cut costs.

Microfiber sheet sets can be washed and dried in ordinary washers and dryers like any other sheet. Because microfiber sheets are made from synthetic or natural fibers, such as cellulose or wood pulp, they may shrink with the first washing. Just like cotton sheets, microfiber sheets too hold dyes well, but bright colors will fade after repeated washing. Both types of sheets wrinkle but can be pressed with a warm iron. Although microfiber sheet sets have a thin fabric, it is tightly woven resulting in a highly durable material. This is especially true of high quality microfiber that maintains its strength and quality even with daily washing.

Users love the feel of a microfiber sheet set, which feels silky-smooth against the skin. It is also cool and highly recommended for people with allergies for being able to repel dust mites. Moreover, microfiber has wicking properties that keep you dry if you happen to sweat while sleeping.

While microfiber sheet sets are available in lower thread counts too, a 1200 or 1600 thread count is recommended. Though more expensive than a lower thread count, remember that the higher the thread count, the softer and more breathable the fabric will feel.

Owing to all the above factors, microfiber sheet sets are stocked by most leading outlets. Manufacturers use microfiber to make knitted, woven, and non-woven textiles.
