Every year, Ward's puts out a list of the top 10 engines available in vehicles. These vehicles need to be production cars that are both street ready and street legal, so alterations to engines or improvements that are not available from the factory do not count towards this top 10 list. It needs to be an engine that anyone is able to purchase, no matter who they are. This year, Chrysler put itself squarely on the map by taking twenty percent of the engines. There are well over a dozen different auto manufacturers that are looked at when it comes to this list, so to have two spots found in the top 10 is rather impressive. These two engines include the EcoDiesel V-6 and the 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat V-8 engine.

It is important to know a bit about each of the engines in order to fully understand the importance of each. First, the 3.0 liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine is in its second consecutive year on the list. In fact, it is the only diesel engine on this entire list. In general, diesel engines are often seen as slower as the other engine options. The engine dues burn the diesel fuel longer, which allows for an improvement in fuel economy, but when the engine is not properly configured and calibrated, it can lead to a lag. This is why there is only one diesel engine. This EcoDiesel engine is also the prime element that continues to bring in the awards for the Ram 1500. This particular model won last year's Motor Trend Truck of the Year award (in addition to several other truck of the year awards), mostly due to the engine. This engine allows the Ram 1500 to receive the very best fuel economy ever for a truck of its size. This alone makes it extremely valuable for an engine.

Now, the Hellcat has been turning heads since it was originally announced and it is still doing so. The Dodge Challenger has been a welcome return to the glory days of American muscle cars, and one element that has always put American muscle on the map is the size of the engine. The Hellcat decided to take this one step further and become one of the most powerful engines out there. In fact, this engine is able to compete with cars that cost five times the same price, yet do not have the same style as this American classic. The 707-horsepower Hellcat is a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI engine. All of these specs make it the most powerful engine Wards Auto has ever honored on the list, which is saying something about the engine itself.

Beyond just the two vehicles, this is the fifth consecutive year that Chrysler has found itself on Ward's top 10 best engines list, and it is the second year in a row that it has had multiple entries into the top 10. It is important to note that the EcoDiesel engine is not specific to the Ram 1500 though. While it is what gives the Ram 1500 the capability of receiving 28 miles per gallon on the highway, it can also be found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is the most awarded SUV ever produced and it continues to be that.

What might be the most amazing about the supercharged Hellcat engine, is the most powerful messenger car ever produced by Chrysler Group, is able to deliver 22 miles per gallon on the highway. For an engine of this size and this much power, just being able to reach this high in fuel economy is unlike anything else. On top of this, it is also the fastest, most-powerful sedan ever produced. This Hellcat represents the 18th engine added into the Chrysler Group's vehicle lineup since 2011.
