One of the big changes introduced in CAT 2015 exam pattern is the inclusion of non MCQ type of questions in each of the three sections. The new type of questions have been planned to be incorporated to avoid the scope of guess work.

The first of its kind questions are anticipated to be tricky and therefore candidates need to be well prepared to face the posed challenge. The good part about inclusion of non MCQs is that candidates can boost their percentile without fearing about negative marking for wrong attempt.

The number of such questions can range from 4 to 6 in each section. The answers for these will not be available as options to select from, rather the test takers will have to solve them and then type the answer on the computer screen.

On the other hand, the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) will have four answer options with one third negative marking. Candidates have to be careful while attempting the MCQs as wrong answers could hamper their percentile.

Both the type of questions – MCQs and Non MCQs will carry equal weightage of 3 marks each. Each correct answer will award 3 marks, while each incorrect MCQ type questions will lead to one third negative marking. If a candidate attempts 3 correct and 3 wrong questions, he/she will score only 6 marks.

Industry experts and academicians claim that the inclusion of non MCQs could prove helpful for aspirants. They need to prepare well and should leave no stone unturned to boost their percentile. As shared by Prof SK Agarwal, expert on Verbal Ability and mentor of CAT 2015 preparation there are three crucial aspects for preparing well for Non MCQs:

  • Thorough understanding of the concepts
  • Practicing more by taking mocks
  • Undertaking error analysis
